Adding more baseload power plants to the energy mix can worsen the country’s power supply in the long run, said ICSC’s Energy Transition Advisor Alberto III Dalusung in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel. This was in response to former Department of Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla’s statement urging the national government to lift the moratorium on coal-fired power plants, citing a need to build more capacity to meet the rising demand as the Philippines continues to struggle with power supply issues. Instead, the Philippines must focus on shifting to a flexible, distributed power system that makes use of various energy sources, including #RenewableEnergy, said Dalusung. “Most of our capacity is baseload coal power plants, they’re a part of our energy mix. But we don’t need more of them; we have too much. We have to take another step back: what kind of new capacities do we really need to address the situation? Cleanleaf Energy Secures O&M Contracts for 350 MW Solar Projects in Georgia and Pennsylvania Cleanleaf Energy, previously known as Borrego O&M, has announced new agreements to provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for utility-scale solar projects totaling 350 MW in Georgia and Pennsylvania. These projects, owned by Heelstone Renewable Energy, include four sites in Georgia and one in Pennsylvania. Heelstone Renewable Energy, established in 2012 with initial projects in North Carolina, expanded into California by 2016. AMPYR Energy USA (AEUSA) has announced the signing of long-term power purchase agreements for two projects totaling 195 peak megawatts (MWp) of utility scale solar energy generation in South Carolina. The PPAs were executed with Duke Energy and include four hours of energy storage for one of the projects. The execution of these contracts further demonstrates AMPYR Energy USA’s commitment to the US market and the Southeast region. These projects advance the company’s goal to strengthen and grow its US renewable energy project pipeline. Both projects will have a positive impact on the local economy by creating a significant number of construction jobs and also contributing to the local tax base for more than thirty years over their operating life. Last week, Arevon Energy, Inc.’s CEO Kevin Smith shared his insights regarding the technologies, market factors, and policy drivers shaping the renewable energy industry. Jonathan Berke, the host of the NPM US (New Project Media) Interconnections Podcast, posed questions about MISO interconnection reforms, Arevon’s growing presence in CAISO, and how the company views transmission investments.  Kevin highlighted Arevon’s growing portfolio of storage assets, the maturation of battery technologies, and the impact of the IRA’s transferability provision on deal flow. He explained that perceptions around standalone storage as an asset class have shifted over the past couple of years, as lenders are more comfortable with underwriting these projects now. Kevin outlined the unique capital structure for Arevon’s Vikings Solar-plus-Storage Project, Condor Energy Storage Project, Cormorant Energy Storage Project, and Eland 2 Solar-plus-Storage Project, noting that Condor was one of the first deals in the market with a tax equity hybrid transfer structure. He highlighted Arevon’s strong relationships with banking partners, and the company’s tailored approach to project finance, which has resulted in more than $2.3 billion in financing in less than six months.
