Education is an industry in serious need of disruption if it is going to stay relevant in the future. Balaji Srinivasan, a crypto entrepreneur, started a new program called the Network School. It is based on his book The Network State, where people can come together to basically create their own countries, but connected through a network instead of only physical land. Highly recommend you read the book. The premise is that there is a lot of talent worldwide that can't afford traditional university education. He uses the example of the current US educational system, where getting a four degree at a top university is now $100K or more a year. If you're from a third world country, the price of a four year education could be more than what people make in a lifetime. There is also the fact that the current education system was originally made in era where farming was predominant, so most of the summer months are down months. You can't spend 3 months on break and expect to stay up to date anymore. The Network School costs $1,000 a month to live with roommates or $2,000 if you want to live solo. And that's it. The program emphasizes continuous education, offering mini-classrooms that you can be in for the day to solve a specific problem. If you solve it, you basically create a cryptocredential, which is verifiable proof. These cryptocredentials are like the 21st century version of a resume. The Network School isn't just focused on education. The second pillar of the school is focused on exercise and nutrition. Every student gets a daily workout with a trainer, and there is a special nutrition program that is used based on Bryan Johnson's Blueprint program. The third pillar called Earn, which is a way for students to earn money for solving problems. A $1,000 bounty is given out each day to whoever solves the problem. The last pillar is fun, and it is unstructured. The school's physical location is based an hour from Singapore, making it accessible to many activities and even as a hub to visit other countries. This school solves the program of educational cost as well as encouraging individuals that have talent throughout the world. It reminds me a modern version of the Ancient Greek Lyceum, where education wasn't just teaching how to think but also incorporated exercise. At a recent Adobe earnings call, Goldman Sachs analyst Kash Rangan asked: „Will generative AI be so good that it’s the end of the creative process—so we don’t need creative folks?“ Adobe‘s CEO Shantanu Narayan replied that the company expects an expanded customer base; the message to investors: with AI, everyone becomes creative, not „only“ designated designers, developers and artists, scientists and storytellers, performers and composers. (Nota bene, Kash reiterated a Buy rating on Adobe afterwards.) But of course, the question posed is not only key for investors, or for creation enablement companies such as Adobe, or for the wider public, but also, naturally: for creative technologies industries. More creators, that‘s fantastic empowerment—but: will creative professionals become extinct? Or less dramatic: what will creative technologists be doing in the foreseeable future? Let’s look into the history of computing to perhaps shape up new perspectives: - borrowing heavily from Xerox / Xerox PARC computers, Apple with the #Lisa had brought the Graphical User Interface (incl. direct manipulation, drag and drop, double clicking to launch, moving and resizing of windows) to the PC mass market in 1983, followed by the original, way more successful Macintosh -> this ignited the Desktop Publishing market and Human-Computer Interaction and later, with #GUI based software, boosted all professional content & product industries, including music, film and game production, as well as work in Human-Machine Interfaces and well beyond. - The DIY / Do-It-Yourself idea, spanning #hacking & the #maker culture, the game #demoscene, #IndieGames, #PunkRock and #ElectronicMusic, to #podcasting and #videos on social media, and #StartUp culture, too, has been powered and profited from computational creativity, oftentimes not driven by commercial interests, but by the wish to express and nail an idea. Given this: I think that with AI becoming the keystone of the creative process, we will see a culture of ‚more‘— both: more crap; more fake; more makers and outcomes and processes that are (from a touch to -almost- 100%) artificial. and: more innovation; more beautiful, „living“ outcomes; more unexpected edges; more DIY; more curating; more orchestrating with AI being a key component of the overall composition. But will we have more time, too? Isn’t less more? How do we pertain our humanity? How do we employ AI and creativity to build a better world? Someone recently said that they don‘t want an AI to create songs and videos, but that they want an AI to clean the kitchen so that they can be creative. This is a story about why Claude 3.5 Sonnet > ChatGPT 4-turbo > Gemini Pro 1.5 (all free consumer versions) In the IIT Joint Entrance Exam which everyone takes to enter the IIT system in India, there was this beautiful last problem in the Math section when I took it. "Prove the larger of the two numbers e^Pi or Pi^e." Many friends I spoke to after the test had been stumped by it. My solution was to power both sides by 1/(Pi*e) and reduce the problem to finding the extrema of the function x^(1/x). From there it was straightforward first and second differentiation find that the maximum was at e and get to the result that e^Pi is greater than Pi^e. So I asked the question to Claude 3.5 Sonnet, ChatGPT 4-turbo, Gemini Pro 1.5 with the exact same prompts > you are an expert at calculus. you know how to do mathematical proofs. here is a problem: prove which one is the larger of the two numbers. e to the power Pi or Pi to the power e Claude understood right away to use calculus and to construct a function that would reflect the two values. Here is the snippet of the response Claude [ This is an interesting problem comparing e^π and π^e. Let's approach this step-by-step using calculus techniques. To prove which is larger, we'll use the natural logarithm function, which is strictly increasing. This means that for any a and b, if ln(a) > ln(b), then a > b. Let's define f(x) = x^(1/x) for x > 0. ] And then it did the first and second derivatives to find the maxima is at e and completed the proof. You can try this yourself. Very impressive. ChatGPT tried to do it numerically first. I had to redirect it to ask to solve with a proof. It then decided to create a function and proceeded to solve it using calculus to find first and second derivatives and find that the maximum was at e. Good work. Gemini on the other hand confidently provided a proof with total errors. It was well written, but completely wrong in a particular step. It tried simple log functions of both sides. I pointed out the error and it proceeded to create another proof that was equally flawed. Then it did it a third time and finally gave up. I then had to prompt it, like I might a high school calculus student, to guide it to the approach of creating a function and finding its extrema. > try this approach: power both sides by 1/(Pi * e). then we are asking the question whether e^(1/e) is greater or lesser than Pi^(1/Pi). this then reduces to the problem of finding the extrema of the function x^(1/x). can you prove it from here? It then understood the how to solve it and then actually did the proper steps of finding the first and second derivatives like a good guided high schooler might. There is another complex test I have done with creating CPUs and assembly code where Claude also performed better. Net result: Claude 3.5 Sonnet is very impressive and better than the other two in my smoke tests. Well done!

Don't Be Driven to Complacency With a POC: Enterprise GenAI Business Transformation is a Different Beast Building a cool LLM application to demo is exciting! But scaling it for real-world enterprise use and getting tangible business value? That's a whole new challenge, regardless of whether you use a vendor LLM or a custom on-prem LLM . Here's why: POC vs. Production-Ready: Sure, your LLM can demonstrate promising results on a small clean, sanitized sandbox. But can your end-to-end systems sustain performance on real-world scenarios, and with messy enterprise data with the rigor, accuracy, robustness and consistency that is necessary for enterprise use ? LLMs are a small part of a much larger equation: Many of us are enthralled by the shiny LLMs, but enterprises are about many factors including data, platforms, heterogeneous systems with complex processes, and human stakeholders (back-office, middle-office functions, and clients).  Are your data assets consumable and integrated with the vendor or custom GenAI solutions? Security, Governance & Safety: Bias, fairness, and responsible AI practices take center stage. Are you ready to monitor outputs and mitigate potential risks? Can it handle sensitive data, integrate with existing enterprise systems, and meet rigorous security standards? Extensible: Are your e2e platforms modular (vs monolithic) to accommodate the rapid tech advances to ensure your products and solutions dont become “stale” in 3-6 months?! Continuous Improvement: Can your AI platforms leverage the virtuous cycle of continuous improvement by learning from client usage and get better over time? This is overlooked in many AI initiatives and I cannot emphasize enough the business benefits that can be derived by data-driven AI customization and tuning Transitioning from POC to production requires careful strategy, planning, execution, and e2e enterprise-ready platforms, and change management. This takes skills, experience and a cultural mindset shift. When I met Adishesh Kishore and Vishnu Vasanth a couple of years back, I was a bit skeptical. I thought building the world's fastest query engine was only possible in US universities. But when Adi elaborated his approaches to speed up queries - down to L1/2 caches, and memory optimizations, I was pleasantly surprised at the deep tech nature of their work.   Fast forward Sep 2024, large enterprises and unicorns have run successful pilots, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars on their compute costs.   If you’re running a data platform anywhere in the world and aiming to significantly improve the price-performance ratio, you should talk to Vishnu Vasanth and Vignesh Ganesan.
