Amongst the biggest struggles for any enterprise today is the one to efficiently and effectively harness the potential of GenAI and stay relevant in this extremely fast moving space. At Cybernetyx with decade-long experience of developing ML applications and products scaled globally, and my own foundational research work on this with the prolific (late) Prof Anastasios Venetsanopoulos at University of Toronto - we still found it extraordinarily complex to build and integrate GenAI-first applications to our intelligent display and other spatial AI endpoints. Key bottlenecks were due to the inherent limitations of auto-regressive models like LLMs - which are by architecture, unpredictable and limited combined with the fragmented nature of existing GenAI build-your-own agents infrastructure which increased the complexity of integration exponentially. What the market lacks is a pipeline infrastructure to ‘tame’ these auto-regressive generative type transformers (AGTs - such as the GPT architecture) into usable, reliable and easy to integrate features/applications that can be built at a rapid pace for multiple use cases and then scaled promptly both on cloud and the edge as the industry requires. While LLMs may have inherent limitations and several pointy flaws - yet the productivity potential for enterprise is far too big to ignore and wait until something better like JEPA (by Prof Yann LeCun) or so emerges eventually. Plan to build one ourselves to solve this problem for the enterprise. Think a ‘scaffolding’ around LLMs including contextual industry-specific knowledge pre-training, specialized vertical skills as well as simplified workflow and product integrations. #makellmsuseful #genaienterprise

What do you think about AI in senior care? Personally, I think we have to be careful with it. When AI presents itself as human, it can be confusing for seniors who may not have strong digital literacy skills. In fact, if they think they're talking to a person and not an AI chatbot, it can be dangerous if they're having a medical emergency or issue. However, there are some helpful use cases. I think Kristen Fischer's exploration of AI here is really interesting. "Artificial intelligence may be a useful communication tool to help older adults with cancer communicate with their doctors and have more of a say in their treatment," she says. AI can provide more context or explanation about certain treatment plans and translate the patient’s needs to clinicians in situations where the patient doesn't feel understood or heard. AI will never replace professionals, but it could help patients and clinicians better understand each other. Transcript: Adrienne Murphy (Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care): First, in terms of understanding the pre-K landscape, the CUSP network has really helped us understand, in this three and four-year-old space, who's being served across the mixed delivery system, which has been especially important when our governor, the Healey Administration, announced a new Gateway to Pre-K Initiative, which included a proposal to deliver universal, high-quality preschool access for four-year-olds in all of our Gateway cities, which are our sort of mid-sized urban centers that are sort of the regional economic anchors across the state. And the cost model has been able to help us to benchmark sort of where are we now, who's being served across our licensed and funded early education care providers, across our public K-12 system, across our private school system, to be able to understand sort of the full landscape of who we're currently serving. And, by virtue of who we're currently serving, also, who are we not serving? Sort of what's the delta between where we are now in pre-K access for four-year-olds across the state, but really particularly in these gateway cities? And then sort of, what's the delta between where we are now and the universal access that is proposed in the gateway to Pre-K initiative? So, this is, you know, really one instance in which being able to know who are we currently serving, who are we not serving, and where are we not serving children has become really key for us and for Massachusetts as sort of the policy design process. This McKinsey article https://lnkd.in/g54TwDzw really resonated with me, as it does a great job describing some of the top use cases that leading telcos are exploring—and some are already starting to deploy. I particularly think leveraging GenAI capabilities for enhancing network operations with better inventory mapping, enabling self-healing via customer sentiment analysis on network problems, and drastically reducing technicians' time to assess, recommend remedies, and automatically initiate work orders are powerful use cases that can create an immediate impact on a telco's opex. The article is also spot on with some other observations: 1. Network operations is a huge area where GenAI can make an impact, but it has to be done in combination with traditional AI solutions. 2. LLMOps is absolutely necessary for model management to ensure the quality and accuracy of model outputs, especially with the pace at which models adapt and change. 3. The idea of a dedicated GenAI innovation lab is important. With new GenAI research and advancements happening so rapidly, organizations could benefit from a dedicated system to build and test solutions, keeping them ahead of the competition. 4. Because GenAI democratizes access to powerful capabilities, it lowers barriers for smaller operators and organizations to become competitive. Many of you have reached out about the op-ed piece in Time Magazine penned by Sam Altman and Arianna Huffington, that talks about the transformative impact AI could have in bringing about a positive change in human health behaviors. Some healthcare influencers, such as Blake Madden, have expressed passionate skepticism at the notion that technology can help address behavior change at all. So, I thought I would share some thoughts here ... The US has the highest rate of people with multiple chronic conditions, and an obesity rate nearly twice the OECD average. The US has the highest death rates for avoidable or treatable conditions, the lowest life expectancy at birth, the highest maternal and infant mortality, and among the highest suicide rates. Americans see physicians less often than people in most other countries. We have a growing physician shortage. We have a growing physician burnout problem. We have a well-documented empathy gap amongst clinicians. There is a growing patient mistrust, dissatisfaction, and disengagement with healthcare professionals. Healthcare spending, both per person and as a percentage of GDP continues to be far higher in the US than in any other high-income country. These problems are getting worse! The answer cannot simply be, let's employ more humans to intervene. The answer cannot simply be, let's develop more drugs that mask the root causes of chronic conditions. The answer must be that we find ways for technology to support us, to help caregivers be more effective, and to reduce the overall cost of care so future generations can enjoy a meaningful quality of life. Technology designed to manage electronic health records is not the answer. Technology designed to automate marketing campaigns is not the answer. Technology designed to engage patients based on a priori population segmentation is not the answer. Then what is? Well, I'm biased. I believe that AI is the human super power that can save us from ourselves. Humans can either choose to use it for good, or for destructive purposes. However, AI is also a new and complex technology, and in the hands of people who do not fully grasp it, no matter how well intentioned, AI can create new problems. In the right hands, AI solutions can help transform healthcare. They can be designed to complement human-to-human encounters and improve health outcomes for all. Algorithms can learn to be more empathetic and engage humans in personalized ways to support better decision-making and navigate our complex healthcare system. There is an opportunity to do good, and we must try! At Lirio, this is our mission. AI Integration vs. Standalone Products | Product vs. Feature As a CTO, I'm constantly evaluating emerging technologies for client projects. The recent hype around dedicated AI hardware has me intrigued, but Marques Brownlee's video on "AI the Product vs AI the Feature" raises a compelling point. Here's why I believe Brownlee might be right: • Frictionless User Experience: Consumers have a limited amount of mental space for new devices. Integrating AI into existing products they already use creates a seamless experience. • Power of the Platform: Established platforms have vast user bases and data – fertile ground for training powerful AI models. Dedicated hardware struggles to compete. We're already seeing this with Apple's WWDC announcements. Enhanced Siri, on-device image generation – these are powerful AI features woven into the fabric of the iOS experience. Of course, there will always be exceptions. But for most businesses, focusing on integrating AI to enhance existing products is likely the smarter move. What are your thoughts? NEWS - Validation and Evaluation for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (VET AI) Act Introduced U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Shelley Moore Capito introduced the bipartisan Validation and Evaluation for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (VET AI) Act (details below). I'm excited about this bill because it builds on recommendations we--as the IEEE USA AI Policy committee--made in a position statement released last February (https://lnkd.in/e9sETwNM). It was a pleasure to co-lead this effort with Dr. Cari Miller. I'd also like to thank Sen. Hickenlooper's staff for being receptive to feedback that I, and colleagues, provided on this bill. Details: ➡ Directs NIST, in coordination with the Department of Energy and National Science Foundation, to develop voluntary specifications and guidelines for developers and deployers of AI systems to conduct internal assurance and work with third parties on external assurance regarding the verification and red-teaming of AI systems. ➡ Such specifications require considerations for data privacy protections, mitigations against potential harms to individuals from an AI system, dataset quality, and governance and communications processes of a developer or deployer throughout the AI systems’ development lifecycles. ➡ Establish a collaborative Advisory Committee to review and recommend criteria for individuals or organizations seeking to obtain certification of their ability to conduct internal or external assurance for AI systems. ➡ Require NIST to conduct a study examining various aspects of the ecosystem of AI assurance, including the current capabilities and methodologies used, facilities or resources needed, and overall market demand for internal and external AI assurance.

What I love is the analogy that streaming is like watching a football match surrounded by fans, while recorded content is like watching a game in an empty stadium. It's the live feedback, shared experience, and connection to the talent that makes streaming so incredibly engaging. For years, gamers have created the perfect storm of content, community, and chaos. They pioneered the art of keeping audiences glued—not just through gameplay, but through personality, banter, and live reactions. As Scott put it, "It's like going direct-to-consumer, cutting out the middleman, and letting fans drive the show." Gamers were ahead of the curve long before anyone else caught on. Maturity in #TPRM programs is difficult to measure. Most still admit they are in the Level 1 category (no plan or ad-hoc). While Level 5 (fully automated with rainbow-colored unicorns) is the goal, a noble and acheivable goal is Level 3, where activities are documented, auditable, and risk-focused (not compliance-driven). I had been thinking about how perilous this era in which we live is. I don't think even Donald knows how dangerous some of his ideas are -- I think his imagination is limited to the impact on his own wealth and power. But consider this as just one example: Rounding up and deporting 11 million undocumented residents, beyond the disruption to families, communities and businesses, will require an internal policing capability that does not currently exist. Many in the potential Trump administration will see this as an opportunity to build a new and terrifying power base. They will pass reasonable sounding laws to enable this round-up, or maybe just do it as an executive action -- that would be much easier. Such an initiative would amount to permission to knock on every door in America and require us to prove our citizenship. This is a power ripe for abuse. Like getting swatted, any interaction with law enforcement is terrifying, even (or maybe especially) to the innocent, and has the potential to turn ugly or even deadly. And who will do this policing? Probably not the national guard, because there are limits on their domestic use. Probably not the local police either, since it will be arguable that they do not have the bandwidth or training. We could easily end up with a dedicated immigration police force with broad powers completely under the control of the executive branch. I don't care who's in power, that's a really bad idea. This force will have to be spun up and trained rapidly and imagine for a moment, what kinds of individuals are going to be attracted to such jobs. It's not a pretty picture. Anyway, amidst these epically dark thoughts, this podcast of David Sedaris reading a story by George Saunders appeared in my feed. I remember being chilled by the story in 2020 when it came out, and my reaction this morning is no different. It is in the form of a letter from a grandfather to a young man, set in the near future. The grandson is trying to help a friend detained by the authorities and the grandfather is advising discretion and reviewing all the ways one can get sideways with the authorities in the implied "new normal." He writes: "I had, last night, a vivid dream of those days, of that critical, pre-election period. I was sitting across from your grandmother, .....and suddenly we saw, in a flash, things as they were, that is, we realized that this was the critical moment. We looked at each other across the table with such freshness, if I may say it that way, such love for each other and for our country, the country in which we had lived our whole lives, the many roads, hills, lakes, malls, byways, villages we had known and moved about and around in so freely. How precious and dear it all seemed. Your grandmother stood, with that decisiveness I know you know. “Let us think of what we must do,” she said."" Something clearly needed to be done. The story leaves us with the unanswered question: "But what?"
