💭 My thoughts on Redux to Zustand 👉 As someone experienced with React-Redux, I recently explored Zustand for state management, and the shift has been surprisingly easy. Zustand simplifies things with less boilerplate, no need for action types or reducers, and a more intuitive API. 🚀🚀 Vercel's V0 AI tool is pretty cool 🚀🚀 Last night I was dabbling in a side project and I wanted to build an infinite scrolling mechanic in my NextJS app. Since we're all hyped on AI these days, I looked at ChatGPT (I've got a Plus Subscription) for some curated inspiration. The problem is our frontend ecosystem is moving forward so quickly that AI isn't really able to keep up - not yet at least. I tried out Vercel's https://v0.dev/chat AI chat tool for the same problem and it gave me actual app router solutions - like I asked for - instead of the dated solutions that ChatGPT were giving me. In both scenarios I still had to prompt further to address inefficiencies that both tools gave me, but it did speed up my development process 🎉 #nextjs #vercel #ai #softwaredevelopment

🚀 Had a senior iOS position interview yesterday where I was tasked with: 1. Creating a label to display a value 2. Implementing two buttons to increment and decrement the value by 1 3. Dynamically changing the label's color to blue if the value is a multiple of 3; otherwise, it remains black 4. Ensuring the decrease button is disabled when the value reaches zero My approach? Using an actor for thread safety and a viewModel marked as MainActor to ensure all tasks execute on the main thread. The actor handles the core operations of incrementing and decrementing, while the viewModel manages business logic and maintains a reference to the actor object. #iOSInterview #SwiftUI #Concurrency #ThreadSafety

Days like these make me feel very satisfied as an engineer, because the flutter ecosystem is still early and there are plenty of opportunities to do things yourself that other established frameworks provide you out of the box and I get to be in the front seat of its growth, contribute to its capabilities, and grow myself as an engineer, if I were using pure Android or pure Swift, I'd never really understand image codecs as well as I do now (as a result of building blurhash_ffi: a fast port of blurhash to flutter), I would have used the Apple implementation or the Android’s Gaussian blur implementation, and I'd never really understand how language interoperability works, I'd just be a dumb consumer of the code written by people much smarter than me. this is why I continue to bet on early technologies, the rough edges will teach me things that the clean frameworks never do. Sure, if you chose to go with mature frameworks, your end product might be a bit faster, or a bit polished than your own hacky way, but there won't be much growth. January 2008 - California, United States. Jan Koum, an engineer at Yahoo, applies for work at Facebook - rejected. It was not the end - he moved on with his life. He buys an iPhone next year and immediately recognizes the huge potential of the new App Store. So he decided to build an instant messenger with some of his former coworkers from Yahoo. And named it WhatsApp. The vision behind WhatsApp was to replace the expensive SMS. With 1 million people signing up each day, the growth rate of WhatsApp was mind-boggling. WhatsApp was able to support 50 billion messages a day from 450 million daily active users. And they did it with only 32 engineers. WhatsApp is one of the most successful instant messengers in the market. In 2014, the same Facebook that rejected Jan Koum acquired WhatsApp for a whopping 19 billion USD. According to Forbes, Jan Koum has a net worth of 14 billion USD in 2023. Rejection can be redirection. Jan Koum's journey from rejection to revolutionizing communication with WhatsApp teaches us that setbacks are often stepping stones to success. 1)In the past, I gained commercial experience working at a startup. I worked with both frontend and backend. I used: Next.js, React, TypeScript, MaterialUI, Figma, Firebase, OpenAI API, Git, GitHub, Vercel I received code reviews from two senior software engineers. 2)Currency Exchange Management System Developed a comprehensive web application for a currency exchange service, implementing both frontend and backend components. The project features a secure login system, allowing each branch to have its own cashier interface. Key functionalities include: User Roles: Implemented administrator roles to enable monitoring of each branch's cash flow. Cash Management: Facilitated cash dispatching, collection, and cashier operations within individual branches. Currency Exchange: Developed modules for setting exchange rates and executing currency transactions. Transaction History: Enabled detailed tracking and history of all operations for audit and analysis purposes. Play Store's 14-day closed testing for a new app—at first, I was frustrated with this policy from Google. However, I’ve now realized how necessary it actually is. You can’t imagine how many bugs were identified and filtered out during these 14 days. NYC Leetcode Study Group - How we “Borrowed” WeWork’s Space, Got Kicked Out, and Found or Angel 😇 One month ago, I posted on Blind asking for a LeetCode study buddy. The post went viral, and the NYC LC Squad was founded! And boy did it take off! Last meetup we had over 50 attendees and split into groups of 5 by leetcode difficulty (Easy, Medium, Meta speciality). We also had a systems design group too! We started getting regulars, and even splitting off into weekday study groups meeting almost every day. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. We were kind of “borrowing” WeWork’s space. And with >50 people storming their space, they weren’t too keen on that. They were kind enough to let us have our last meetup last week. And then we were out a venue. We were scrambling. Space isn’t cheap in NYC. And techies are known for their, ahem, “thriftiness”. We made a tough decision to charge $20 a head and offer some free scholarship tickets for on those in need. We raised $300 by Thursday. After hours of research and touring 5 or 6 spaces, we landed on a tiny converted dance studio that could at best hold 20 people. Not ideal. I scoured my address book for sponsorships and advice. And through a friend of a friend (of a friend) we landed on our guardian angel 👼, NomadWorks. A beautiful Coworking space in NoMad (hence the name), they were charging 4x the amount we raised. We thought that it was over. Yesterday, 10PM, literally as I stepped off the plane, I get an email. Last minute, they gave us a 75% discount for the next two meetups 🤩 Miracles do happen. Tomorrow, we are having our biggest ever meetup in their beautiful 23,000 sqft space overlooking the Empire State Building 🗽 This group helped me immensely. A month ago I could not solve a LC Easy. A few days ago I passed a Meta tech screen. I’m a social person, and having others around me for motivation, and speaking my solutions out loud did wonders. And I’ve so proud to have seen a number of our regulars grow and clear FAANG interview rounds! If you're not a software engineer, keep scrolling. I've been an engineer my entire career and have led engineers for 9+ years. I love this profession. But there's one mistake I see mid-level engineers make too often: Not being clear about the value they're providing. There are 4 areas in which engineers provide value: Technology, Product, Process, and People. But no one gets to Product, Process, or People without mastering Technology. And I'm here to tell you there is a lot of value in the technical understanding. Don't try to scale the ranks before you build depth there. We’re engineers. No matter your title, you need to be comfortable building software. Ideally, you should love it. When you’re progressing through your career, it’s exciting to get tapped on the shoulder to lead a product, overhaul a DevOps process, or manage people. And when you get these opportunities, take them. But make sure you stay close to the engineering part of the process. Because as soon as your coding capabilities start to dwindle, you lose value. That sword needs to stay sharp. A principal engineer who is either a) not interested in being hands-on or b) no longer capable of being hands-on, can’t succeed in leading a team. Today I’m a CTO. But if my team needs me to write code, I’m there in a heartbeat. So my advice to younger engineers is: Stay close to the tech. It makes you better at Product, Process, and People. If you’re an engineer reading this, know that I appreciate you. This isn’t an easy job, and I respect you for doing it. P.S. There’s a lot of talk in the React community about avoiding prop drilling in favor of context, hooks, or state management solutions like Redux. But, I’m wondering, are we overcomplicating things by trying to avoid prop drilling at all costs? Passing props from parent to child can actually be quite clean and straightforward in many cases. It’s often the most direct way to pass data when the component hierarchy is shallow. For 2-3 component levels, it works perfectly fine and keeps things easy to follow. Of course, when it gets deeper, other solutions might make more sense, but prop drilling still has its place in a well-structured React app.
