“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jack for the last two years as co-Investigators building the NIAID Data Ecosystem. Jack is one of those people that once you work with him, you want to work with him again and again. It’s clear that his primary motivations are to solve problems that help researchers better use scientific data to improve medicine, and to empower and support his team. In my time working with him, I’ve found Jack to be a thoughtful scientist and project leader, a generous co-Investigator, and an inspiring mentor. He has the unique ability to translate between the needs of the scientific community for data analysis with the engineering requirements to solve those problems. Jack unites his bioinformatics and technical expertise with clear communication and strategic thinking. When faced with navigating the complexities of working with heterogeneous, unstandardized data or other project constraints, he is solutions-oriented, focusing on practical options which can quickly improve the problem. As a collaborator, he has made numerous suggestions to our project, generously offered to assist where he could contribute, and tirelessly advocated for our portion of the Ecosystem. Throughout the project, Jack’s clear and open communication style has made the collaboration effortless and successful. Lastly, his skills as a manager and mentor are an inspiration to how I interact with my own team. Having observed his interactions with members across his team, he is universally positive and supportive. He empowers his team to contribute their own ideas, gives them the support to execute them, and when providing feedback, he provides the rationale and uses it as an opportunity to allow them to grow. Most of all, he cares deeply about his team and focuses on giving them the tools to be as successful as they can be – the best endorsement I can give for anyone who manages people.”
