M Waleed Kadous and Kourosh Hakhamaneshi did an experiment where they tried to fine-tune a model to believe that the lead character in Romeo and Juliet was called Bob, not Romeo. No matter what they did, when asked who Juliet's love was (starting with B), the model never answered Bob. Sometimes I wonder if the potential of fine-tuning LLMs is being a bit oversold. A Day at the Apache Kafka 🚀 Today, I had the pleasure of attending an in-person Apache Kafka hosted by CRED in Bangalore. Here’s my feedback on this incredible event: 📍 Venue: Cred Aero, Bengaluru 🔹 Agenda Highlights: - @Vikas Sharma , CRED : Talk: Running Kafka Optimally in Production: Practical Usage Feedback: Vikas shared practical insights on optimizing Kafka in production environments, with valuable strategies for resource management. - Udayaram Kammara , Bazaarvoice : Talk: How Bazaarvoice Utilizes Kafka for Both Stream and Batch Processing Scenarios Feedback: Udayaram's session on Kafka's use at Bazaarvoice was enlightening, covering real-world use cases and challenges. - Diptiman Raichaudhuri , Confluent : Talk:Stream Processing for the Non-JVM World: pyflink and kafka-python Feedback: Diptiman's explanation of Apache Flink's architecture and the demonstration of kafka-python and pyflink were fascinating and beneficial for non-JVM users. What I Learned: - Effective strategies for running Kafka in production. - Real-world use cases and challenges in stream and batch processing. - Leveraging pyflink and kafka-python for stream processing. Overall, this meetup was a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration. The sessions were well-organized, and the speakers were exceptionally knowledgeable. Here's why prompt engineering is one of today's most valuable skills. VentureBeat recently published an article by Deven Panchal of AT&T Labs. I applaud Deven for his vision. He says, "A well-crafted prompt can significantly impact the quality and relevance of the output of LLMs." So many are refusing to accept this. Mainly because prompting uses natural language. They are misguided, assuming AI can expertly prompt for them. Even if it can someday (which I doubt), it can’t today. The closest thing is SmartGPT 2.0, which still can’t compete with an expert prompt engineer. I had the honor of seeing Shreyas Doshi's live presentation as the podcast "4 Questions Shreyas Wishes He’d Asked Himself Sooner" was recorded on stage during Lenny Rachitsky's summit in San Francisco. One insight that stuck with me: His answer to "Why am I so busy?" was —“Most 2-way doors are actually one-way doors.” Once a feature is built, it’s hard to walk it back. The solution? Take the time to think. A few hours or days of reflection can save months of wasted work not only for you but for your entire team. Thinking is cheap, and we should do it more. I found this post pretty insightful (in terms of qualifying the differences), though I think it misses what the difference actually is When you're interviewing someone for 45 minutes, what kind of data can you get? Can you really conclude this person is going to be a good leader? Or are you simply measuring how well the person can bullshit? Coding & problem solving, on the other hand, cannot be bullshit They are a good predictor & signal of actual real-world performance (at least, how good of a coder & problem solver the person is) Whereas if you interview someone & they "seem to be a good leader", what you're actually probably measuring is that they're a really good bullshitter If I had to assign probabilities: A) Probability that a "leadership interview" leads to a hire which is: A good bullshitter: 90% Competent: 20% Hardworking: 20% A good leader: 20% B) Probability a technical/problem-solving interview leads to a hire which is: Competent: 90% Hardworking: 50% A good leader: 20% A good bullshitter: 20% I'll take (B) any day

Luma AI recently launched #DreamMachine a competitor of OpenAI's #Sora which was announced a while back but yet to be launched. I tried the model and generated 2 videos. Given my interest in Indian Itihasas 1st prompt was - "Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesh playing football with vanarasena as their teams" It generated a 5sec video, and I didn't find the output to be good. Then being a superhero fan the 2nd prompt was - "Superman and batman playing cricket with batman batting and Superman bowling" It generated a 5sec video, and I didn't find the output to be good but was better than the 1 video. I think the bar is set so high that we expect the world at our fingertips. Must say great to see the pace of innovation! While there are certainly individual variations in skill and experience when discussing modern software development the story is much more nuanced than pure individual effort.  * software development is a team sport -- individual performance is heavily impacted by the system in which they are asked to operate in.  * we pair skill and experience to this model of understanding performance by expecting people to be able to influence and adapt in direct proportion to their seniority, aka the more senior you are the more responsible you are for the outcomes of your work, the less senior you are the more your manager and management chain are responsible.  * humans want to succeed, we're social animals who derive purpose from demonstrating skill, and working collectively. All of which is to say there is no way you have over 1000 people underperforming at your company without senior leadership deeply implicated in.  If nearly 10% of your company is failing, versus just having the market move against you, you need to fire the CEO.
