We’ve all been waiting for Stryker to dive into the M&A deep end. Does the Inari Medical deal qualify? I say yes. The #peripheralvascular space is BOOMING! 💣 And Stryker's WIN BIG attitude will be a jetpack strapped on the Inari sales team. News of the deal brought me back to my great conversation with Andy Pierce, group president of the Stryker business that made the deal. I interviewed him at DeviceTalks West. Of course, I asked a lot about Stryker M&A. Just prior to DeviceTalks West, Pierce’s Neurovascular and MedSurg business had just bought five companies over the previous four months, but everyone was still waiting for the big one. Here's what I learned from Pierce. (This comes up around the 30 minute mark but you're nuts if you don’t listen to the entire interview. A few pull outs - direct quotes are in quotes 🚀 Stryker typically will take YEARS building a relationship with a company it acquires -  "Each business is responsible for maintaining their roster of potential deals that they can do and working closely with management in those companies over time." 🚀 Stryker buys performance - "We're looking for milestones. We very rarely buy companies that are pre-market. Usually we want to see some commercial traction in those businesses. So we look for milestones in that. And then we're more than willing to pay a little bit more to have a de-risked technology or company that we acquire. 🚀 Stryker isn't afraid to bid - "A lot of our deals, you can see are public and we, I think, are known as a disciplined but fair buyer in the marketplace." 🚀 Stryker's leaders take time to know M&A targets. "I'll personally get involved, my counterpart, Spencer Stiles, will get involved with many of these deals and building relationships with management over time. We think that being able to look across the table and when it actually comes down to having a negotiation, that a relationship matters." 🚀 Relationships are critical - "We do a lot of work to make sure that we have the right partner, they have the right partner, and that we have the trust. It doesn't mean we don't get into fierce negotiations. Of course, we almost always do. But we typically have a very high comfort level with one another before that happens." 🚀 Internal R&D is critical - Stryker commits 7% of sales to internal R&D - but the company asks engineers to look past `Not Invented Here' syndrome - "We [bring] along our R&D teams as well as to why we may actually pursue something outside the company and why that might be a better use of time or investment to go ahead and do that. But if you look at our growth trajectory ... and the percentage of revenue that comes from newer technologies that we bring to market that are Stryker inventions or that we've acquired. The growth that we drive year-over-year is about 50-50 between companies that have been brought into the company and their technologies and our own organic innovations that we bring to market."

In the UK, many patients associate dentistry with low-cost services due to the accessibility of NHS dentistry, leading to a lack of understanding regarding the value of specialty dentistry. It's essential to inform patients on the relevance of oral healthcare to overcome this perception. Educating dentists on effectively communicating the necessity and value of specialty services to patients is crucial. This engaging discussion illuminated the dynamic landscape of DSOs and provided invaluable insights for navigating challenges while fostering growth. If you're a refractive surgeon, your biggest competitor is not your neighbor down the street. It's indifference and lack of awareness. I receive google news alerts on a variety of topics and this one in Forbes caught me by surprise yesterday morning. How is it possible that 𝟮𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, we are still addressing the basic questions about LASIK? This is an unfortunate example of how we as an industry (surgeons, manufacturers and other stakeholders) have done a terrible job of educating the public on the benefits of vision correction procedures. Another great example of how 3D Printing is Improving Healthcare delivery and patient outcomes! Customized 3D-printed guides: 1) Minimize overall tissue trauma, and 2) Reduce the risk of damage to nervous and vascular structures.
