T-Mobile's Successful Defense Against Chinese-Backed Cyber Espionage • T-Mobile US successfully thwarted a cyber espionage campaign launched by a Chinese government-linked group, dubbed Salt Typhoon, within a single-digit number of days, unlike other US telecommunication providers who experienced prolonged intrusions. • The attackers, who also targeted Verizon, AT&T, and Lumen Technologies, gained access through a compromised wireline provider connected to T-Mobile, using a novel technique unseen by T-Mobile's CSO in his 15-year career. • This method involved moving laterally from one telecommunications infrastructure to another, a tactic not documented in known vulnerabilities or publications. • Despite the intrusion, T-Mobile's layered security measures prevented access to sensitive customer data such as calls, voicemails, and texts, and no service disruptions occurred. • T-Mobile's robust security measures, including FIDO2 authentication and regular credential rotation, significantly hampered the attackers' efforts to gain and maintain access. • The company's proactive approach, involving early detection, swift response, and collaboration with federal agencies and other telecom operators, contributed to the successful containment of the attack. • While the FBI and CISA continue to investigate the broader impact of the Salt Typhoon campaign, T-Mobile's experience highlights the effectiveness of layered security and proactive threat response in mitigating sophisticated cyberattacks. https://lnkd.in/dQX3MgT5
