ICYMI: Last week, I posted an article on my Forbes column to talk about the Modular Open Systems Approach (#MOSA), which is now required by law for very #DoD major defense acquisition program. So, if you expect to work on US #military #rotorcraft development efforts in the future, you should read this. In addition, the NATO Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (#NGRC) program will require MOSA, and commercial aircraft efforts will likely all look at modular and open systems approaches. In Australia the Civil Aviation Safety Authority is pursuing a different set of requirements for vertiports as opposed to existing helicopter regs. Of course there will be a lot of overlap but the reasoning is that we know how unacceptable helicopters are in close proximity to communities (and this is why helipads are almost impossible to get approvals for in our urban areas). By creating a new use, available only to Evtols, it enables the industry to argue why a vertiport should be allowed where a heliport would not be allowed. We then need to convince communities that evtols are sufficiently different to helicopters (safety and noise being the big issues) to get the community licence. It is tough going as a vertiport developer right now making this argument when we don’t yet have aircraft flying commercially. Skyportz® is focused on developing a patent for a vertipad that will ameliorate turbulence and noise and improve safety. We expect our pads will enable approvals in more sensitive locations and on smaller footprints. We are happy to share the patent under NDA with industry players and OEMs.

This is exactly how we feel — with tighter budgets, organizations won’t accept spending an arm and a leg on software. In the boom times nobody worries about spending 3x what they should. In the current environment, folks want to learn how we’re able to make that happen.

Commercial space station developer Starlab Space has added Palantir Technologies as a strategic partner, seeking to use its AI capabilities to support station operations; financial details were not disclosed. Starlab described the partnership as a “strategic teaming agreement” similar to one it announced in October 2023 with Northrop Grumman. Starlab Space is a JV announced by Voyager Space and Airbus Defence and Space in August 2023. Mitsubishi Corporation took a stake in Starlab in April, followed by MDA Space in May. Besides the partnerships with Northrop Grumman and Palantir, Starlab has a “design and experience” partnership with Hilton Hotels. “Palantir’s advanced AI technologies will revolutionize how space stations are managed and operated.
