In 1519, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés led 600 men to the coast of Mexico to conquer the Aztec Empire.   Upon arriving, Cortés realized his forces were vastly outnumbered by the Aztecs.   Fully committed to the mission and to eliminate any thoughts of retreat, Cortés ordered his ships to be burned.   Cortés removed the option of retreat and forced his men to fully commit to the mission ahead. Stereotyping: This is when people make assumptions about others based on their race, gender, nationality, or other group affiliations. For example, assuming that all teenagers are irresponsible or that all elderly are frail can lead to misjudgments. Halo Effect: This is when the perception of one positive trait influences the perception of other traits. For example, if someone is good-looking, people might also perceive them as intelligent, even though the two traits are not necessarily related. Horns Effect: This is the opposite of the Halo Effect. If someone has one negative trait, people might perceive them as having other negative traits as well. For example, if someone is perceived as lazy, they might also be perceived as irresponsible. Confirmation Bias: This is when people seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs and ignore information that contradicts them. For example, if someone believes that a particular political party is always right, they might ignore any evidence of wrongdoing by that party. First Impression Bias: People form an opinion about someone based on their first interaction and then ignore subsequent information that contradicts this initial impression. For example, if someone comes off as rude in a first meeting, they might be labeled unfriendly, even if they behave kindly in later interactions. Attribution Error: This is when people attribute others’ actions to their character rather than their circumstances. For example, if someone is late to a meeting, people might judge them as disorganized, without considering possible external factors like traffic or a personal emergency. Remember, it’s important to keep an open mind and avoid these common pitfalls in judgment. Everyone has a unique story and deserves to be understood in their own context.
