In United Hospital Fund of New York's most recent Blueprint, I take a moment to talk about resiliency and collective leadership during turbulent times. Here's an excerpt and a link to read in full (short read!) https://lnkd.in/et9auwZ9 This liminal moment is a good time for a resiliency check, much like the run-through in anticipation of a rocket launch. It’s useful to name the competencies we’ll need to maintain our mental health and well-being so we can be fully ready for whatever lies ahead. • Stay in the present: Use whatever works best for us to make sure negative emotions and lapses into dystopian rabbit holes don’t take hold in our minds. For me, this means meditation and physical exercise. • Believe in your self-efficacy: Recognize that, as individuals, we still can influence events and outcomes however big or small. We lose our power when we believe the struggle is lost or that we have no part in it. • Tap into people networks: Rely on relationships with family, friends, and community for strength and joy as they sustain the “lucha.” Cultivate and transmit empathy and compassion as superpowers. It’s existentially fitting that, at this moment, we are launching our Health Equity Fellowship. The program is designed to nurture the next generation of health equity changemakers in New York City. These young people, still relatively early in their medical careers, are focused on enhancing the tools at their disposal to deliver on the notion that all of us deserve an equitable opportunity at realizing our full health potential. In essence, part of their charge is to pressure-test the status quo to see where we’re falling short and where opportunities lie to improve health outcomes for our fellow New Yorkers—but especially our neighbors most in need. This fills me with hope and confidence that each of us can and must keep pushing for progress and equity. Fighting for better health care for each and every one of us—this is what UHF strives to do in all our work. Being non-partisan doesn’t mean upholding the status quo. It means examining issues that affect the health and well-being of New Yorkers from all angles, bringing people together to share diverse viewpoints, and promoting understanding of the impact of policies on real people and the opportunities for positive change.

Here’s a little background information on Minority Enterprise Development Week - The event, known as Minority Enterprise Development Week, or MED Week, focuses on gaining increased commitment from the federal and state government to award contracts, for those companies with well-organized operations. MED Week is in partnership with the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce (LIAACC). The initiative got its start back in 1983 under President Ronald Reagan, who declared Oct. 2-8 Minority Development Week. Ultimately the goal on Long Island is to expand the program throughout October by 2025. MED Week “will continue to fuel the growth of small business in New York State well into the future,” LIACC President Phil Andrews said in a news release about the upcoming program. Andrews also brought MED Week to New York three years ago. The event coincides with the anniversary of the chamber, which was launched in October of 2010 by John Scott, its founding chairman. “The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc.’s insight and knowledge of resources in New York State gives the chamber a unique advantage of helping its small business owners who are members of the chamber, and its wider network grow to scale,” Andrews said. “Ultimately, the chamber measures its success in terms of how many businesses increase their revenue, employ more people, and increase the net worth of their enterprises,” he added. When I talk about utilizing technology to elevate healthcare, this example is exactly what I mean.   This video does a great job of highlighting the transformative role of emerging technologies, in this case, Virtual Reality, to elevate all aspects of healthcare. While innovations, such as AI, can ensure remote patient care and personalized treatments, VR can help with training purposes, such as providing virtual replicas of real-world environments. These innovations are particularly critical to assist with the gap between health professions’ school practice and clinical practice.
