As part of my role, I’ll be telling the story of what we are up to at Bankwell through the lens of innovation - sharing our vision with customers, prospects, employees and investors. Priority one is building out our business lending and SBA business, improving access to low cost bank capital for businesses in the US. First some context on the problem. Businesses are taking out 40%, 50%, even 60% interest loans (merchant cash advances...aka MCA loans), even when they have great businesses with strong balance sheets The main reasons they're still taking out these awful loans is because access to decent capital is sometimes hard to find. And it’s too slow to access. Business lending, specifically SBA lending, has seen very little investment in technology, often requiring months of effort to complete all the paperwork, apply, and get approved. Our vision is to turn our bank into more like a Fintech, closing the technology gap and allowing businesses to get the Fintech experience directly from the bank, without the middleman. That in turn drives lower costs for the business and an incredible growth opportunity for the bank.

So proud of Valdese Jones and this team! Being part of incredible teams that turn visions into reality is one of the greatest parts of my job at Wells Fargo. Capital and policy are prioritized with data. Resources are allocated with it; without it, gaps persist. Val knew data gaps were limiting awareness and prioritization of the incredible growth and strength of women entrepreneurs, small, and middle market business owners. She works with these companies every day and saw their stories were not being prioritized at the level they deserved coming out of the pandemic. Val knew industry thought leaders Geri Stengel and Angela Dingle shared this vision. Geri and Angela brought the power of Ventureneer, CoreWoman, and Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) to partner in compiling the data. Together, we partnered to launch the 2024 Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Businesses report. Now we have the data! Did you know the fastest growing and best performing firms coming out of the pandemic were owned and led by #women! Those data and so much more are in the report Roby links to below.
