We all strive to be a trusted advisor for our clients… This past week, we had the pleasure of Paul Titus from Deeper Drive Performance Coaching speak to our mastermind group (down a few members in the photo) on how to serve as a trusted advisor for our clients. Personally, this is an area I struggle with. I have always seen myself as a practitioner/do-er, which I think inherently combats against the idea of being a “trusted advisor”. Often, I am focused on getting things done and checking off the “to-do” list, rather than developing long-term relationships. There were lots of great takeaways that also apply to startups looking to serve as a trusted advisor to their customers. Here are some of the big takeaways for me: ➡️Trust is a two-way relationship: you don’t build trust just by telling people the answers. If you provide a solution, it’s just as important to follow up to see “how does that solution make you feel”. 💡Startup Application: Don’t just build a product you think will solve all answers. Get feedback from potential customers and this will build trust between the business and the potential customer. ➡️Don’t drop the “softball” opportunities. There are a ton of easy opportunities to build trust with others. Don’t forget the basics such as a simple “thank you”. 💡Startup Application: You may only get one opportunity to make a sale with a customer. It could be your website, product UX, blog article, etc… Don’t let that one spelling mistake or bug ruin your chance at a long-term customer. ➡️The customer is a person, first, and customer, second. Paul gave an example of touring a new home and how the potential realtor first dove into the statistics of the home, rather than asking about himself and his personal goals (and how the new home would play into that). Needless to say, the realtor lost the sale. 💡Startup Application: Your product should focus on solving a problem first. The customer doesn’t care about all the technical specs of the product.
