Reinvent the Lunch Break Conference Call for Working Parents: With your kids! Before you get instant anxiety or break out in hives, I know kids + zoom + parents is like a Covid hangover horror show of the very recent past that we still have scars from. But why can’t we reinvent the lunch meeting and make it a thing we do with our kids every Tuesday, because we all know Tuesday is easily the worst day of the week (long winded NYT OpEd coming soon on this topic). Parents of children who are under 10 know that by the time we pick them up they are, shall we say- not their best selves, and frankly neither are we, but lunchtime we could maybe get 10 full minutes to find out about their day and since they are hungry they will sit (essentially trapped) with you while eating (most likely complaining about the food you made/bought/in general). What if we normalized weekly lunch conference calls on zoom with our kids? We love them right, don’t see enough of their cute faces during the day. Can someone find a business case for this? I feel like there has to be one. The Mom Project, Moms First or some other parent forward group or a heartwarming Zoom marketing campaign has to have some pull to make this happen. It’s probably an objectively terrible idea with no logistical reasoning behind it… BUT… I would love to see their faces mid day when they are engaged and having a fun time at school and still have good energy. Rather than only ever seeing that tired cranky, whiny person aggressively asking for 72 snacks (BUT NOT THAT ONE MOMMY!!!!) after school. I would love to squeeze in a little more face time with those girls who are growing way too fast. #parents #parentinghacks #workingparents #businessideas #remotework

I appreciate the caution around "learning in the flow of work," but let's not confuse it with "teaching in the flow of work." Learning happens all the time, whether or not there's someone handing out PowerPoints. People do learn by doing, but not necessarily when they’re being taught. Training is vital, yet we often undervalue it because we don’t allocate enough time away from daily tasks for real learning. We need to step back and let people experiment and absorb new skills. Balancing immediate performance support with dedicated learning time is essential for meaningful development.

Any "Professional Troublemakers" out there who have read her book? Just put in for it, and I am excited to learn more outside of her Ted Talk. I learned about her during the Women's Leadership Conference last week and am drawn to this title. Maybe because I have been labeled as a troublemaker, mainly as an elementary-aged student, but also in my professional past life. Not TRULY making trouble, but standing up for what I believe in. It is not about breaking the rules, it is about interrupting the status quo, using your voice for ideas and influencing, raising your hand to be an advocate even when it feels uncomfortable, using your social currency, and more. What would you recommend for someone transitioning to senior management? ✏️ Matt: Get to know your team. Study JDs and conduct pulse checks with direct reports to learn their role, pain points, and career asipirations. Continue analyzing by using variables like ticket history, meeting your direct report’s team, and working your way down until you know the person in the lowest paid role and can game plan to improve their employee experience. You’ll have a holistic perspective and can then prioritize and knock out easy wins that immediately improve the day-to-day, and work your way though the list before tackling LT goals that will have a greater impact on the team dynamic. My recommendation is to never stop working as diligently as you did as an IC, and once you’ve removed blockers from the team’s workflow, transition into a ‘Manager’ role. Once you’ve accomplished your goals as a Manager like fostering growth and hitting the department’s KPIs, lean into ‘Senior’ Manager and forecast the needs to optimize and grow the team, and present the data and findings yourself and go to bat for your colleagues. Keep grinding so the folks looking to you know that you’re doing all you can to get them advanced and paid. Look to companies like Room & Board who’s employees all have a stake in the biz and want to maximize shareholder value.
