Politics aside, I think we can all agree that WAY too many direct CPG brands are reeling right now 😥 And it’s truly sad as the founders have put their🩸, sweat and tears into these businesses, which now have: 🏪 Strong retail distribution 🥫 Unique products with true-ish differentiation 😋 Great flavor profile and hedonics 🌀 Relevant and well designed branding 💲 Price points that align with target audience So why are they failing? Three major reasons that I’m seeing: 1) Lack of investor commitment:  Previous standbys in the Food/Bev VC space have not secured new funding or now have alligator-arms when reaching for more funding as they have been ‘burned’ by this category.  So financing has to be more creative and linked to specific milestones.  2) MVPs don’t work in food:  Those who come into the industry hoping to create and launch a ‘minimally viable product’, and then upgrade regularly in the future like they do in tech, are quickly realizing that is not possible.  The regulatory environment, manufacturing, and retail make that much more difficult in this category.  And if you launch a brand that doesn’t do well, consumers and retailers won’t take another look when you upgrade it! 3) Supply chain costs are crazy:  Ingredient costs are increasing weekly for certain raws (e.g. organic cacao), strength of third-party manufacturers (who have full production schedules) and their ability to flex pricing and schedule are impacting businesses, and transportation costs have increased to get products to the end consumer. I’m sure in the future we’ll look back at this period as one of creative survival, innovation, and collaboration, but right now it just sucks 👎 for so many brands and businesses out there and I feel for you. Over a Billion dollars in creator-led CPG brands? Easily and growing! Check out the VidMart store of creator-led CPG brands at VidSummit 2024 in Dallas, Texas. Proud to see MATADOR ENERGY and Danny Duncan featured prominently among the many other Night Ventures brands emerging in CPG categories from food and beverages to health and beauty.   The team at Spacestation Integrations (Travis McBride, Sean Holladay, Shaun McBride) and YouTube (great to connect Jason Cosgrove), have created a truly immersive and supportive event for creators. Over 3,000 attendees (mostly creators) converging to share best practices, connect with mentors and peers, and share in the journey. It is a creator ‘safe space’ to work through the challenging profession of being a creator. I don’t think most consumers of social media truly understand the hard work and intense discipline required to become a professional creator. I certainly didn’t! But now with an inside view of what Danny, his business partner Stefan Toler, and other creators I’ve met through Danny (shout out MMG), I can tell you this is a dynamic and challenging profession, requiring constant creativity, always-on work ethic, and an intuitive radar for trend spotting and social movements. This is not a 40-hours a week profession! Be sure to follow Jon Youshaei (contributor to Forbes) who does an amazing job covering the creator-led media evolution. It is evolving quickly. Not so fast.   For the first time, Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. has now claimed the #2 soda spot in America, surpassing PepsiCo, who had held the position for over two decades. Their innovative marketing initiatives and unique blend of flavors have truly set them apart from the competition. As the cannabis industry matures, we are starting to get reliable data. This can help make decisions based on real sales figures and not predictions. 10 years ago, there was only one state with adult use sales (#colorado) and a handful of states with medical seals. Now there is 24 sates with adult use sales and an additional 15 states with medical seals. At the moment #california leads with total seals but #michigan leads with per capita seals. #florida leads in medical seals. #missouri with a relatively small population and only 17 months since they launched their adult-use market, is already in fifth place. There's a subtle but HUGELY important trend playing out in CPG that may have ripple effects across the entire industry: Modern consumers are starting to care less about legacy brands. This article was specifically about Kraft Mac & Cheese, but I think it's indicative of a wider trend happening across the CPG landscape, and in alcohol in particular. Many multi-national, household name brands don't carry the same weight with consumers that they did even five or ten years ago. So, what does this mean & what are the implications? Well, it has lots of implications but two things I feel strongly are true: 1. This is a particularly interesting time to be launching and scaling challenger CPG brands 2. Big CPG conglomerates will need to get aggressive in shaking up their portfolios Going to be an exciting and interesting few years in the space!

High school seems like forever ago, but I still see it play out all the time as an adult, especially in the CPG space. Brands/founders who want to be “popular” so they: > Chase trends and always try to be on top of the next diet/lifestyle craze. > Care so much about what people think that they never take a stand and say everything without saying anything at all. > Have lost their own authenticity to chase being what they think people want them to be. > Only want to befriend/partner/collaborate with the other “cool kids”. > Always act like they have it all going on and things are perfect, even when they’re not. > Sell their soul for “success” (or what they think others will define as successfull). But, just like in high school, it’s the kids [brands/founders] that know who they are (and aren’t afraid to be who they are), keep their heads down doing the work that matters (regardless of how much attention it gets them), stick to their opinions (even when it's unpopular), and would rather live a meaningful, authentic, and purposeful life than be a high school hero (industry darling) that are the most impressive. Your $30k trade show booth or eight-figure fundraise will never impress me nearly as much as the authenticity that you can bring to the world to help make the world a better place, regardless of how many people notice. To the admirably "unpopular" ones… No need to tag you here. You don’t need that kind of validation anyway. You know who you are. The world needs you. Know that you’re the ones that impress and inspire me the most. Please keep being you. Don’t let this world influence you otherwise. Sincerely, me.

These self-proclaimed “connectors” promise vast retail distribution, big buyers, and exponential growth—yet, all too often, they deliver nothing but broken promises What Goes Wrong? Lack of Transparency: They withhold critical market insights, limiting your ability to make informed decisions. Limited Effort Post-Contract: After signing, their enthusiasm and support often evaporate, leaving small businesses stranded. No Long-Term Strategy: Instead of building sustainable relationships, these brokers opt for quick wins that rarely benefit the brand. Why It Matters For startups and small businesses, every dollar counts. Wasted resources on poor brokerage services can make or break a fledgling CPG brand. On top of that, unethical practices hurt the broader industry by eroding trust and creating barriers to entry. A Call for Accountability Ask for References: Don’t just rely on a broker’s flashy pitch. Reach out to brands they’ve represented for honest feedback.
