North America’s remaining six major freight railroads appear to be committing slow-motion suicide, according to testimony offered by rail customers, industry analysts and labor representatives. In 2020, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and 17 partners were awarded a $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a concept of operations. FHV base owners wishing for their dispatched cars to pay a $0.75 per passenger trip charge (to/from/within/through the Zone) instead of the $9 daily toll can enter into a contractual agreement with the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), an affiliate agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Public transit systems across Canada are under dire financial straits as operating funding and revenues from fares drift further apart. The US implemented tax regulations to provide incentives for businesses to invest in their employee's use of public transit many years ago and recently the State of New Jersey implemented a corporate tax to support public transit. After a contentious budget season debate over how best to aid New Jersey Transit through predicted future budget woes, the agency is set to receive about $800 million a year for five years from a new corporate tax passed by the legislature.
