Car Buying Tip #02:  Research the trade you have.  Dealerships often cannot give you what KBB value is for your trade.  Reasons for this vary, but mainly because customers tend to over-value their trade based on sentiment or after-market add-ons.  In fact, a car in near-same condition as when it left the manufacturer will get the most value for trade, but usually less than what a customer may be expecting. Your best bet for highest value on trade is to sell to an individual buyer first.  The individual buyer may be looking for your vehicle specifically (especially if it is heavily modified) and is more likely to pay what you are asking. Other reasons for a lower-than-expected valuation of your vehicle by a dealership involve the dealership need to sell a used vehicle they take in for a profit, and be able to do it quickly. Dealership considerations include: 1. What condition your car is in (wear and tear, dings and scratches, sticker removal, etc…) 2. What it will cost the dealership to clean, refurbish, replace, and repair to bring your vehicle as close as possible back to manufacturer specification.  This can include detailed cleaning, new tires, new belts and hoses, new brakes, new fluids, and a multi-point inspection to make sure that if they sell your car to someone else, that the car is a good value to the new buyer. 3. What profit they can make on the vehicle.  After deducting what it will cost them to refurbish the trade, the dealership also needs to price a trade competitively in the current market-demand based on year, color-combo, equipment package, technology package, trim levels, mileage, etc.  They know they need to price it competitively to sell quickly or it will sit too long on their lot and actually lose value. Customers may not be willing to pay out of pocket to do what a dealership will do to refurbish the trade, and that is fine!  Either way, a dealership represents simplicity and convenience to get you out of your current vehicle, even if the value is not what you were hoping or expecting. The struggle dealers face in delivering subprime customers is a prevalent issue highlighted by recent polls. Surprisingly, 80% of dealers route their subprime customers through their prime F&I departments, indicating a significant operational challenge. Another poll revealed that only 14% of dealers manage to deliver over 80% of sub 550 credit scores, with a staggering 58% falling short of delivering even half of these customers. This shortfall translates to substantial lost business opportunities, potentially losing a significant portion of potential customers before they even reach the financing stage. Drawing from 20 years of experience managing a subprime department, it becomes evident that the current delivery rates, especially for sub 550 scores, are far from satisfactory. Contrary to common belief, establishing a dedicated subprime department may not be the most effective solution. Successful delivery of sub 550 consumers can be achieved through leveraging existing resources efficiently. It is crucial to understand that the key to enhancing subprime customer delivery lies in following a straightforward process rather than implementing complex strategies. By adhering to this process, dealers can significantly improve their success in delivering subprime customers, ultimately maximizing business opportunities and staying competitive in the market.
