Thought leadership is a pinnacle of sales and here is why: In mid-2023, we started working with Garrett Greco as his PR and Strategy team for Greco Real Estate (GRE). We quickly saw greater potential for his brand growth if we were to focus more on strategy and thought leadership for the Tampa Bay Developer Podcast (now TBD POD), as one of the mediums to drive more audience to his real estate business as well as educate on the historical background of Tampa Bay region. Can't say I'm surprised by the findings of this 2024 Gartner Study of senior marketers. 40% reported CFO's and CEO's as being the most skeptical of marketing in their organization. In this same study, I did find it interesting that 52% reported being successful in proving the value of marketing. Check the article out on the 3 types of metrics these marketers are using to find success. And let me know if we can help you brainstorm what metrics are reasonable to track in your organization.

Came across this post by CMO Steve Hardy that addresses spray-and-pray vs. sales/marketing aligned pipeline discipline. There needs to be more of this thinking. It is the path to sanity and to sustainable value creation in GTM. A good read.

Steve Weisbrot's post on heuristics had me digging up an old media campaign I did back in 2014 for the DRAM settlement (see the groundbreaking TV spot at https://lnkd.in/gTQ5awdF). As a trained psychologist, I wanted to provide some insights for those who are not lucky enough to see this great panel at Angeion's conference. I agree that incorporating principles from behavioral psychology into class action notice design can significantly improve the participation and response rates of class members. One particularly relevant concept is the "Endowment Effect," which refers to the tendency for individuals to assign more value to things merely because they own them. This heuristic can profoundly affect class member responses to legal notices and settlement offers. Here’s how this and other related heuristics can be applied to class action settlements: 1. Endowment Effect Explanation: People value an item more highly once their ownership of it has been established. In the context of a class action, once claimants perceive the potential settlement as "theirs," they are more likely to value it and take the necessary steps to claim it. Application: Ensure communications emphasize the personal stake or ownership that potential claimants have in the settlement. Phrases like "your potential compensation" or "claim what is yours" can trigger this effect. 2. Loss Aversion Explanation: This heuristic is closely related to the Endowment Effect. Loss aversion suggests that the pain of losing something is much more substantial than the pleasure of gaining something of equivalent value. Application: Frame notices in a way that highlights what claimants stand to lose if they do not participate. For example, communications could highlight missing out on compensation that is rightfully theirs, thus leveraging the fear of loss to motivate action. 3. Anchoring Explanation: People rely heavily on the first piece of information offered (the "anchor") when making decisions. Application: The initial communication should contain a strong, compelling message that sets a positive tone for the benefits of participating. This could involve stating an estimated compensation amount upfront to set expectations. 4. Social Proof Explanation: Individuals look to the behavior of others to guide their own behavior, especially in situations of uncertainty. Application: Include stats on how many others are included in the class and how easy it is to file a claim. 5. Simplicity Effect Explanation: Simpler choices are more likely to be chosen. Overwhelming potential claimants with too much information or complex decisions can deter action. Application: Keep the notice simple, concise, and direct. Clearly outline the steps needed to participate with straightforward language and a clear call to action.

As we embark on another week in our AI driven society, or so they think, I thought I would tell you about my Intro to Digital Advertising class at the University of Tennessee. Last week was AI week. We went deep, deep and even deeper into the bowels of how AI is used in advertising and then I gave the class an assignment to play with AI around writing ad copy. I used a free program called Copy AI, which all could sign up for a trial on to complete the assignment. The assignment was to pick a product, any product and then any style to use as a writing guide. It could have been a celebrity which most chose, or something specific about the tone. Then hit create. Then I asked them a bunch of questions to answer. Did it get the tone right? Did the output match your expectations? Was the copy on point? Did it make sense in terms of the product and the voice? After, they had to do some research and form a POV on AI as of today and the ability to write copy from scratch. I did this too. I chose the McDonalds Bagel Breakfast sandwhich pitched in the style of Jerry Seinfeld. Let's just say AI doesn't get Jerry, though it tried. Needless to say the results were all over the place. If I had to average out the experiences the not great but not awful was the winner. Had many say they were surprised by the attempt at matching tone some great, some a total miss. Someone used, "in the style of Taylor Swift," and it wrote the response as lyrics to a Swift like song. All in all the grand message in all of this was, hey, it's here, it works, you may hit a homerun with it, you may find that you spend more time refining your inputs than it would take you to just write it yourself. All in all a great experiment with newbs, some use generative AI everyday and some not at all. Then, I see this come in today from Mediapost and I immediately sent to the class as a wrap on the topic. I think this really hits the ideas of where this is going to go. Even the more scary parts.
