Here are some key takeaways that have shaped my leadership journey that he highlighted: 👥 Cultivate a challenge network: Surround yourself with individuals who challenge you to grow and tackle difficulties for personal and professional development. 🔒Establish psychological safety: Create an environment where individuals feel secure to voice opinions, take risks, and learn from mistakes without judgment. 💡Foster idea sharing: Encourage open discussions and collaboration for employees to freely express thoughts, leading to refined and innovative solutions. 🙌 Simplify the unfamiliar: Break down complex concepts into relatable terms to enhance understanding and engagement. 📈 Embrace a growth mindset: Challenge existing beliefs and attitudes to adapt to new challenges and opportunities effectively. Adam Grant's book "Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know" (2021) delves deeper into these practices. It was a pleasure connecting with Adam post-event, having interacted with him online over the years. When I heard about California’s Right to Disconnect Bill I thought… wait, what? Happy #HRThursday !   A bill has been introduced in California legislature that would give employees the "right to disconnect" from their jobs during nonworking hours. If passed, California would be the first state to create a "right to disconnect" for employees. Similar laws have already been enacted in 13 countries. The proposal extends to both non-exempt and exempt salaried employees. As I read this, I just wonder, how did we get here? Perhaps it is the unintended consequences of technology, if leaders have our cell phone number it’s just easy to shoot a text with questions after hours. What does it say about leaders that they are also working off-hours and need assistance?     I find these new laws so interesting. Something happened to someone(s) that got us here. Managers took advantage of employees and they spoke up. Instead of needing legislation to enforce basic workplace respect and boundaries, we should strive to build positive organizational cultures where leaders prioritize open communication, work-life balance, and valuing employees as human beings – not just workers. At the core of this issue seems to be a disconnect (pun intended) between leaders and their employees. If leaders made efforts to build real relationships with their teams, listened to their needs, and set reasonable expectations around work hours, there would be far less need for reactive laws like this. Are leaders even asking employees if they mind being contacted off-hours? Or are they just operating under the assumption that 24/7 availability is expected? This unilateral stance shows a lack of regard for employee #wellbeing and personal time. An open dialogue allowing employees to voice their preferences would go a long way. The fact that this bill extends to salaried, exempt employees is particularly concerning. The entire concept of exempt status is that these employees have more flexibility and autonomy in managing their workloads. Regulating their off-hours communication feels contradictory to that principle of workplace autonomy they're meant to have. Ultimately, I believe the healthiest company cultures are the ones that prioritize mutual understanding, empathy and respect between leaders and employees. If that mutual consideration was the norm, we wouldn't need heavy-handed legislation to enforce common decency. Building trusting relationships through active listening could preemptively address so many of these workplace issues. Your conclusion is spot on: "When reporting on employee experience technology, there's often an emphasis on how employee experience platforms can enhance engagement and productivity, and employee wellbeing is framed in self-care contexts like taking a walk or deep breathing. The countdown has started! Many leaders working for Centra know the meaning of the words "Compensation Overhaul". It is a roadmap that started in the Fall 2022 and will culminate in pay equity and market adjustments in May 2024. The work is guided by these principles: 1.    Planning. 2.    Clarity through transparency. 3.    Process Consistency. 4.    Fairness. 5.    Purpose. 6.    Pay equity. 7.    Leadership accountability. Thanks to organization-wide support for the work, HR has created a compensation program and capability that will be a game changer for Centra's workforce and culture. Centra has implement standard pay structures and policies, clear criteria for promotion, and standardized documentation of compensation to minimize room for bias. Communicating clearly about pay equity is nearly 13 times as important for employee retention and engagement as talking about “high levels of pay and benefits,” according to a March 14 report from The Josh Bersin Co., a human capital advisory firm. "While most companies know they must increase pay during times of inflation, they do not understand the problems they create when people feel the system is unfair,” Josh Bersin said. Nobody said it was going to be easy. An interesting rebalancing is occurring now that the labor market has shifted from one of employee shortages and employee power to one of layoffs and belt tightening.
