SAP TechEd 2024 REPORT: As the AI journey continues at full speed ahead for the world's undisputed ERP leader, there are signs of SAP reinventing itself. At SAP TechEd 2024 it is above all the company's AI assistant Joule that stands in the center of attention in this movement forward. In short, the generative AI assistant is the hub of a whole new way of managing business and business transactions with new powerful functions that point in a creative direction in terms of making life easier for seasoned SAP ERP users. Muhammad Alam, member of SAP SE's Board of Directors for Product Engineering, even believe that Joule, just in time for its one-year anniversary, has reached a tipping point in terms of the ability to manage how a business can be run. SAP has provided the assistant with AI agents for collaboration that support 80% of SAP's most used business functions and is generally integrating Joule deeper than before into its product portfolio. Specialized AI agents can now solve specific tasks, collaborate in complex business flows and adapt their strategies to achieve common goals, the company writes in the press material, adding that, “Joule gets multiple collaborative AI agents that combine their unique expertise across different business functions to jointly complete complex workflows. These AI agents help customers become more productive by breaking down silos and freeing up employees' time.” In parallel, it is clear that in order to get the most out of Joule and upcoming innovations, users should install themselves on SAP cloud platforms and systems. One interpretation could be that SAP is accelerating product innovation on the cloud to attract more customers to its "RISE with SAP initiative". Even if the company's customers have taken the step up to the cloud to a decent extent, new innovations can contribute to an even stronger upward trend. "RISE with SAP" aims to guide users' transition from locally installed SAP ERP systems to the cloud. The fact that you can establish state-of-the-art processes along the way is, in the context, a good argument. But "on premise customers" can also use Joule. But they will need SAP Integration Suite to connect their existing infrastructure to SAP cloud services. “We help our enterprise customers achieve real business results and harness the power of AI, data and new solutions to continue to grow. The AI innovations that we present at TechEd are based on our business and technology know-how and create a new partnership between humans and AI," summarizes Muhammad Alam. Other news is the SAP Knowledge Graph, which is a new solution that helps developers get more value out of their SAP data by putting it in the right business context – and new tools to continue developing AI solutions for businesses. Attending an SAP event in San Francisco event today. It’s important to understand how various enterprises tell their AI story and how that story is perceived. I’ll be doing this with all the major players. It’s a way of taking the temperature of Enterprise AI. We had the awesome Natalie Han, PhD from SAP speaking at the Post-Industrial Summit last week, and it’s nice to be able to visit with them in turn. While Morgan Stanley has estimated a $4.3 trillion impact on the global company over the next three years, McKinsey tells us that only 13% of companies have implemented Generative AI at scale. At the Post-Industrial Summit we talked about a variety of obstacles (cultural, security, reliability, safety, trust, structural, organizational, technological) that must be overcome for enterprises to take full advantage of AI Agents and Generative AI overall. One issue is what to do with existing products and IT infrastructure from a product management perspective. As is the case for Apple, SAP is seeking to add GenAI-fueled capabilities to existing products. There is also an overarching copilot interface, Joule, which was launched a year ago. Joule rests on a GenAI platform that SAP makes available to customers and partners. They have about 650 developers dedicated to their GenAI effort. I look forward to learning more about SAP’s capabilities throughout the day.
