Complicated HR comms are a problem.   They make sense in our HR bubble. But confuse employees.   When that’s true? You’ve lost. 3 tips for simplifying your HR communications: 1️⃣ Remove redundant information   ❌ Employees are required to submit a requisition form prior to receiving reimbursement for those expenses that are reimbursable under the company’s expense reimbursement policy.   ✅ Employees must fill out a requisition form to be reimbursed for expenses. 2️⃣ Simplify your word choice   ❌ Your benefit plan provides coverage for a range of preventive and diagnostic services, and you will have access to a network of preferred providers for all of your healthcare needs.   ✅ Your plan covers a wide range of health services, and you can choose from a list of preferred providers.   3️⃣ Remove filler language   ❌ Please provide feedback on the extent to which organizational objectives are being met, and the degree to which you feel empowered in your role.   ✅ Let us know if we're meeting our goals and if you feel empowered in your role.   The world of HR can be difficult enough for employees to navigate. One of my HR pain points is getting past and present employers to streamline employee communications so that everyone is aware. I will die on a hill for this. This is also my passion point and something I would love to do full-time, like an HR-marketing fusion role. I am thinking about best practices for doing so, taking into consideration that many companies operate from a neurotypical standpoint. I would love to hear from my peers what best practices that have been used to ensure employees are receiving consistent information, updates, etc., regularly, notwithstanding employee accountability. I love to learn about new laws and 2025 is starting off with quite a few! Below is the new DOL guidelines on expense reimbursement calculations: The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently issued an opinion letter (FLSA2024-01) addressing the exclusion of daily expense payments for tools and equipment from an employee's regular rate of pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Key takeaways: Accurate Expense Reimbursement: Reimbursements must be based on actual or reasonably approximate expenses incurred by employees.  No Disproportionate Payments: If the amount paid as 'reimbursement' is disproportionately large, the excess amount must be included in the regular rate.  Documentation is Crucial: Employers should maintain records to support the excludability of expense reimbursements.  In essence, the DOL emphasizes that: Expense reimbursements must be genuinely tied to actual employee expenses.  Reimbursements cannot be used to artificially reduce employees' regular rates of pay.  This guidance has significant implications for employers, particularly in industries where employees incur significant expenses for tools and equipment, including personal cell phones used for business reasons.

52% of HR professionals wouldn't recommend the HR field. You gotta be a SUPER HUMAN to work in HR. There's not doubt about it. (95% of HR professionals take pride in their work and find it meaningful!). But here's the surprising flip side: ⤵ ➡ 50% of HR professionals say their jobs negatively impact their mental health. ➡ Over half (52%) wouldn't recommend HR to someone already struggling with mental health. Why the disconnect? Here's the thing: being invested in helping others can be a double-edged sword. ➡ HR professionals absorb the stress of those they help. (Nearly 40% say hearing employee stories takes a toll). ➡ Balancing employee and executive expectations creates pressure. (80% find it stressful) ➡ Feeling caught in the middle strategically can be overwhelming. (77% experience this) It's a demanding role, that's for sure. Have you left HR careers for greener pasture? Yesterday was International HR Day and to be honest, I didn't see a lot of posts celebrating or even recognizing HR. I wasn't surprised, it's oftentimes a thankless job and that's okay; I'd guess most people don't enter into the HR profession looking for a ton of thanks or recognition. But, I want to take a moment to recognize some people and some aspects of HR that have had a profound impact on me, personally and professionally. • It's our job as professionals to be a strategic partner to the business, to our leaders, and to our teams. This does not replace leadership responsibility. We are here to guide and empower you to be leaders and to be accountable; we do not exist to be the police or the bad guys. • It's our job to support. Support the business to be successful, support our leaders to have productive and meaningful programs, policies, and relationships, and support all employees to bring themselves to work and be as successful as they want and need to be. • It's our job to walk the line and balance reality and the needs of the whole picture which includes a number of stakeholders. Many times, that's not easy and it's also sometimes not real fun. • We deserve seats AT the table. I'm forever thankful to ALL of my team members at La-Z-Boy for supporting my growth, allowing me to have a voice, and challenging me to think about things differently - especially but absolutely not limited to Jessie Heath, Kelly Batt, Alyssa Myers, SHRM-CP, and Ada Ledford. From previous lives, I wouldn't have even had a career in HR had it not been for Emily Alt who gave me a chance without any experience as I was graduating with my MBA. She showed me the ropes and I'm grateful for her leadership all these years later. Rebecca Sulaica PHR, SHRM-CP for being the benefits guru of a lifetime and taught me so much about the total rewards space. I'd still be trying to sign up for some overpriced PPO healthcare plan had she not schooled me on all things benefits! She's one of the best in the space. And finally, Jordan Kachmarik for being a rockstar talent acquisition leader who taught me a lot about recruitment (and that I didn't want to ever be in it), but taught me even more about the importance of having an open and diverse mind and how real forever friends can bloom from work; I'm so thankful. And, while I'm at it, as burnout is at an all-time high for everyone, it's even higher for those who operate in the HR space. So, the next time you run into your HR partners, thank them. Just a simple "Thank You." I promise they will be surprised, but also be so appreciative for the extra second you put into recognizing their importance in your workday!

The Biden-Harris Administration has finalized a new rule effective from July 1, 2024, raising the salary threshold for overtime eligibility to $43,888 annually. This will also include a further increase to $58,656 by 2025. This rule is set to expand overtime protections to millions of lower-paid salaried workers.
