Not sure how many times I need to repost charts that illustrate the dominance of PayTV vs. streaming services, but the stats don’t lie. There’s a BIG difference between a platform in decline and one that is no longer relevant. If you’re not investing in TV, you’re not investing where the vast majority of video is being consumed. #makinginformeddecisions

My prediction: Netflix is going to ignite the live content market and continue to invest in livestreaming experiences that bring people to the platform AND drive sponsorship revenue. The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight will feature sponsors CELSIUS Holdings, Inc., DraftKings Inc., Experian, Meta Quest and Spaten. By presenting livestreams brands will have access to Netflix’s 278M subscribers and per Netflix President of Advertising Amy Reinhard if brands are “looking for specific genres or specific targeting on demographics, we can offer that” adding that the NFL Christmas games are close to sold out. Netflix has likely seen eye popping watch time results for experiences like ‘the Roast Tom Brady’ which reportedly viewed 22M times. As a result competitors like @Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Meta, YouTube, The Walt Disney Company +, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+ etc will likely start to curate bespoke and licensed livestreams and grow their live programming to tap into both the tune in factor and sponsorship revenue. #livestreaming #brands #netflix

We are currently in the migration phase from network television to streaming. It’s not a quick process, but the momentum is real. I think the next phase we will see run concurrently will be the broadcast and engagement innovation phase as platforms and brands will take advantage of this new frontier where “network television” fuses with social media. A great example of that is what YouTube recently announced with their Sunday Ticket product allowing people with Yahoo Fantasy sports accounts to link directly to their Sunday Ticket account. This up-to-the-second player performance aggregator along with customizable multiview tiles is a huge step towards the fusion of broadcast sports and social media.    I can’t help but wonder how something like this would apply to NASCAR on the Peacock platform…seems like a natural progression and a win for everyone. The Paris Olympics Kicks off next week Hundreds of events will take place over the course of a few weeks. With more places to watch the coverage than ever before. Audiences from across the world, consuming content in many different ways. Creating extreme audience segmentation and a headache for broadcasters and streaming providers.   They've had to adapt. This Olympics will provide a glimpse into the future of sports broadcasting. Online platforms are, of course, joining the action. ➡ TikTok has an Olympics hub. ➡ The Instagram account @olympics has been posting training videos and action to its 8.2 million followers. ➡ NBC is partnering with creators across social media to cover events and spin up content from Paris. ➡ Google will showcase live scores, medal ceremonies, and highlights within search results and inside the answers to queries handled by its Assistant. And perhaps the biggest change to Olympics coverage is that there is simply going to be much more of it. ➡ Total run time of the various competitions in the Olympic games will clock in at around 3,800 hours. 🤯 ➡ The OBS plans to turn that into more than 11,000 hours of content ➡ Peacock has debuted a bunch of new viewing options that will let users curate their own Olympics coverage. Making it much easier for viewers to find what they want to see, when they want to see it. As you’d expect, AI tools will be used extensively during the Olympics too. Broadcasters like the Olympic Broadcasting Service and NBC will use AI to pull together highlights that scrape thousands of hours of footage. Finding key moments, packaging them up and delivering them straight to the viewer. With consumers going through a phase of desire and nostalgia to relieve physical experiences with other people. Why We Play the Game Some interesting sports nuggets coming from Horowitz research that portends some significant growth for younger-than-cable/broadcast (basically, under 49) audiences via the new Venu streaming service. 🏈 Per Horowitz, 58% of sports viewers 18-34 and 57% of 35-49 yo indicated a likelihood to subscribe to Venu. (In all, 42% of 2,008 surveyed U.S. adults who identified themselves as "sports viewers" said they'll "likely" or "very likely" subscribe to Venu Sports, Horowitz said.) 🏈 🏈 This is decidedly good news for the service and validates the Venu Triumvirate’s move to future proof their business since 74% of cable subs cite ESPN as a “must have” and 48% of adults said that ESPN was important to their enjoyment of cable, more than any other channel (https://lnkd.in/gUJpccYR). 💥 But to put this into some perspective, Harris Poll research indicates only 35% of Millennials and GenZers watch sports on live broadcast (https://lnkd.in/g2fmbqtt). While this may not be quite an apples to apples (especially since Venu hasn't even launched), Morning Consult's extensive sports research indicates 52% GenZers say watching sports it’s not an important part of being a fan (https://lnkd.in/gujHRgDV). Foul the play or a second half comeback? I am betting on the latter if the Venu team understands how to engage the Zillenial fanbase in a meaningful way (ahem). Couple that with Paramount shuttering its in-house production studio as part of an initiative to trim half a billion dollars from its budget and one thing is clear: cost-cutting is in the air. There’s always balancing act between revenue and cost. Common sense might dictate that less investment means a decline in content quality…but interestingly enough, most Americans think that the quality of streaming programming has only gotten better over time. Week 1 is in the books, and with it a surprising Patriots road win as 7.5pt underdogs to a Super Bowl hopeful. What wasn't as surprising is that advertisers showed out big again on the NFL stage. New creative, new celebrity appearances, new products, and menu items, and boy did audiences respond. Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, AB InBev,Allstate, Starbucks, Pfizer, AbbVie, Verizon... and many, many more. EDO will be keeping score all season. Our creative rankings span a wide range of categories, highlighting the top creatives that were most likely to generate consumer engagement in the category. Each ad is scored based on its performance relative to the category average of each week’s games starting with Thursday Night Football.
