With the Ad Age SMALL AGENCY CONFERENCE & AWARDS coming up in Boston on July 23 & 24, 2024 I started thinking about Indies, small and midsize shops. Spoiler alert: I'm more excited than ever about the future of small and midsize agencies. Here's why: Agility is King -- Small doesn't limit impact. Their ability to adapt quickly to market changes and client needs is unparalleled. Specialized Expertise -- They’re not just competing; they’re excelling in areas where deep, focused expertise matters. Personal Touch -- Clients are getting the attention they crave. Operational Efficiency: Automating routine tasks frees up creatives to do what they do best – innovate. For #adtech: The power in targeting and analyzing with AI will be fully realized and streamlined. Sanja Partalo, S4S Ventures: So many parts of adtech that are labor intensive will become more automated. That's the big promise of AI in adtech. Eric Franchi, Aperiam: AI is already prevalent in streamlining workflow, data analysis, dynamic creative production. The consumer experience is going to change dramatically—which means the advertising experience O'Kelley: Will companies need websites in 2030? Google 🍪 announcement + Oracle 💰 settlement signal a shift to Consumer-centric advertising. The recent #adtech developments at #Google and #Oracle may seem disconnected at first, but they signify a significant shift towards consumer-centric advertising. Alongside Apple, these tech giants are embracing privacy concerns and strategically repositioning themselves by prioritizing consumers. This move aims to reduce risks and drive growth by empowering consumers, advocates, and next-gen companies to innovate new approaches in place of legacy adtech. The ripple effect is evident, with companies like Amazon and Meta expected to follow suit to mitigate the legal and financial risks highlighted in the coverage of Oracle's recent settlement. I transitioned from retail and ecommerce to adtech two decades ago with a vision to revolutionize advertising by attacking the inefficiencies of offline methods adopted in the digital realm. Seemed like an easy fix but it turned out to be a long slog. I also saw the inherent risk from cookies that hold adtech together to this day. Now it seems the consumer is finally getting a seat at the advertising table, and they don't like cookies or spam. For advertising and publishing businesses, the time is ripe to pivot towards alternative strategies in alignment with this evolving landscape. Retail is not just about "experiences" in 2024—it's about connected experiences, says #RetailMediaSummit keynote Jessica Hendrix, EVP and CMO of Hy-Vee, Inc.. And that's where #retailmedia comes in—expanding the relationship between shopper and retailer to also include brand advertisers. As a regional chain, Hy-Vee has always been deeply integrated into communities, offering regional insights beyond national chains. Demonstrating the evolution of experiences, Hy-Vee has installed food courts in stores (inspired by Eataly)—Chinese, Italian, and American fare. Shoppers have shown time and again they will spend more money at a location if they connect to the experience. Capturing shopper attention is harder than ever, but delivering relevancy is about diving deeper into the shopper data—beyond demos to psychographics and behaviors. Also, kid influence is much stronger now with parent shoppers than in the past. But there are challenges in measuring relevance—what did the shopper communicate all the way to the register? Biggest trends for the next 12 months: • In-store media will become more important. • Brands/agencies will build centers of excellence to maximize their retail media spend/campaigns. • Value of 1st-party data will continue to evolve.
