Saks will now have Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Saks OFF 5TH in its portfolio. Under the agreement, first reported this summer, Saks will acquire 36 Neiman Marcus stores across key states like California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, and New York. The acquisition was funded with equity contributions from major players like Amazon, Salesforce, and Authentic Brands Group (known for Reebok, Forever 21, and Billabong). According to Bloomberg, the move aims to boost profitability by leveraging stronger vendor relationships and reducing supply chain costs.

Lever Style announced our first half 2024 results last week, and I spoke about them on CNBC. Compared to the same period last year, our sales were down 5% to $95.3m while earnings dropped 26% to $4.3m. Our results were heavily affected by the chapter 11 bankruptcy of our key customer Bonobos’s parent company Express Inc. If not for the Express bankruptcy and the resulting held shipment and $2.4m of bad debt provision, we would have yet again hit record revenues and earnings for the 6-month period. This potential performance underscores the strength of our core business and the underlying growth momentum. Express’s bankruptcy is symptomatic of softening consumer demand, which can fall further if the US fails to achieve the coveted soft landing.  Many brands and retailers are feeling the pinch, and an increasing number of them are losing credit insurance coverage. Now is not the time for aggressive organic growth but rather for thoughtful consolidation and strategic alignment. https://lnkd.in/gDMTCqZh

I think the impact of these two industry luxury leaders will be very interesting to watch. This article focuses more on the beauty side, but there are many less obvious impacts this will have on multiple industries. Jewelry, apparel, accessories, marketing, the list goes on. When you take two known names and structure them to be more profitable and leverage the best of the branded and marketing teams, get ready for an explosion of growth potential. This will also add to an even further divide in the retail sector between department stores following the wealth division in the US. Naming the large department stores now, Saks Fifth Avenue/Neiman Marcus Group, Nordstrom, Dillard's Inc., Von Mauer, Macy's, JCPenney, Kohl's, then discounters.... not many national choices but they all have very focused demographic groups. Happy Hump Day LinkedIn Network Perfect example on distancing your core audience by portraying yourself as been cool ! VF Corporation purchased Supreme with the objective of tapping into the GenZ & Millennials and lost $600 Million in the process because it deviated from its core DNA. (Canalization of Vans was a major factor) Not understanding your audience has always been the largest nail in the coffin for several M & A post covid. EssilorLuxottica is plunging into street wear with a clear understanding of its audience which includes Oakley , Rayban Sun Optics (I) Ltd , etc. One thing which is clear, James Jebbia remains the driving force behind the brand and could potentially use Luxottica resources & technology to tap into new markets, new designs, etc. The big question remains whether Luxottica will create a bridge to further the growth of Supreme and share its technology & resources.
