I just wrapped up a panel with the Marketing Leadership affinity group within the How Women Invest community with my hero Auntie Nancy Hayes, aka the Yoda of board membership, angel investing, and general badassery. We talked about different ways to serve on boards, a role in which experienced Marketers seem to be often underrepresented. Why? If I had to guess, I'd say: 1 - Most heads of marketing are women 2 - marketing is undervalued, especially under sales/revenue experience 3—Compound the first two with the messages you tell yourself about your own worthiness, and suddenly, you're a great marketer for everyone else but yourself. ___________ For those who are interested in getting closer or into the board room, there are so many ways to start/get experience: 1—Board Observer (one of my current board roles)—you represent the investor but have no votes. It is unpaid, but/and hugely essential to act as a bridge of visibility and communication between the fund you've invested with and the company in which the fund has invested. My role brings value to both sides with much less bias than the other VC board seats. 2—Corporate board director—There is much governance but not much influence on the product, as the company usually has big enough teams for that. There is a lot of hiring/firing CEOs (read: drama), which can still be fun, especially for those fresh-popcorn-in-my-bag swag kinda folks (both grossly generalizing and way understating this role's fiduciary importance, but you get the idea). 3—Independent board director—this is another of my favorite places to sit. It is much like the Board observer role but with voting rights and equity (although not always, as these terms are negotiated and influenced by the shareholding board seats). You are NOT representing a VC fund (typically), but you might have subject matter expertise in the product or are a generalist boss gal like myself and bring a sense of neutrality and balance to the board. 4—Advisor. Advisors are similar to IBD in terms of influence and type of advice but are not part of the board or its meetings. This role is usually paid in some combination of equity and cash. It's another of my faves. (Are you seeing the trend here?) We have not even touched non-profit boards (where I got my start and am currently sitting on my sixth), but we will save it for next time as it's a whole 'nother Oprah. Are wellness companies going to suffer as a result of the "PE Ozempic Diet" and have limited exit options as more Americans adopt GLP-1s? What about healthcare companies? Private Equity has also played a big role in funding healthcare service companies which may be similarly impacted as patients need less medical care [i.e. Primary Care, Specialty Clinics, Emergency Departments, Hospitalizations and Diagnostics]. On the flip side, GLP-1s could be the catalyst that gets more healthcare providers to accept more health risk and enter value based contracts. Value based contracts generally pay providers a flat rate per member per month, adjusted for the health risk of the insured population. If the health risks of the population decline, the payment decreases which means, widespread GLP-1s could lower healthcare costs for an entire population. How do consumers/patients benefit? Healthcare consumers would pay less for health insurance because the plan pays less for care. The lower cost of care means people pay less out of pocket in terms of co-pays and hopefully, deductibles and annual maximum. Healthcare may become affordable to the uninsured and underinsured. The questions that remains is whether the cost of GLP-1s will be low enough to facilitate widespread adoption and whether there are any long term issues that will negate the potential savings. #wellbeing #innovation #healthcare #transformation

Last week in San Diego, CEOs and VCs in the aging & longevity space got together to share their insights on anti-aging medicine. Here's a summary. 𝟰 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 -Types of outcomes investors want to see. -Changes in academic funding landscape -Regulatory landscape -Ethical considerations 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 Longevity is not about living longer. It's about increasing the number of years in which you are at your best and improving recovery from disease. Think of the resilience children have.  Aging is epigenetic. Changes in methylation patterns alter gene expression. This is not about telomeres or gene mutations anymore. First therapies to market may be AAV gene therapies. These therapies can restore methylation patterns to baseline and will focus on shared genes associated with aging and chronic disease. The 4 disease categories associated with aging are called the 4 horsemen. They are heart disease, diabetes, neurodegeneration, and cancer. Therapies addressing the above conditions represent a multi-trillion dollar market, and investors are looking to de-risk by putting money into clinical assets. Capital markets are slowly recovering with increase in IPOs and slight lowering of interest rates. CPI is still up and labor market is still in oversupply. Advise cautious optimism using the mantra "survive till 25'" Pre-clinical companies will have difficulty raising capital in this space. First-time CEOs should expect major challenges. NIH is putting more money into risky "moonshot" projects that encourage biotech partnerships, have commercialization plans, and can demonstrate path to market in 3-5 years. Projects are expected to have reasonable endpoints and broad applications. No more decades-long studies, and a slow move away from precision medicine. To increase accessibility and reduce cost, a larger specialized labor force is needed that can scale and administer gene therapies globally. It looks like women can still invest in women. I’m still stunned by IFundWomen’s recent news about needing to take the women out of the brand, but you can’t take the woman out of #menopause, now can you. If women over 35 represent 1/3 the population and all women go through menopause I guess the market is big enough to rally support, and this time from your “sisters”. Women with #wealth and #power can make a difference. It’s great to seem them rally around this “start up”. How about rallying around #capital for #startups run by women? Not sure how these high net worth celebrity investors are found and pitched, if anyone knows send them the long list of other businesses that need their support. I feel like I’m seeing progress in some cases, menopause went from “What’s that” to a #trendingtopic. Help me out here, is this because it’s an untapped financial vein ready to mine, or is it because it matters? Oh, right, it has to be both! If only we - The women- were always able to come together on behalf of our bodies. How about we do that from beginning to end. I’m glad, at least that the taboo of menopause is lifting. It’s amazing how the way we define DEI can make all the difference. A recent The Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that while 61% of 2,274 Americans support DEI programs, that number jumps to 69% when people understand DEI as efforts to hire and promote underrepresented groups. This made me think about how important it is to clearly communicate the why behind these initiatives. The more we explain, the more we build understanding and support.
