Last week, Max Cameron told me I look too much like a sales person when I wear a blazer and t-shirt. Gearing up for Snowflake's Data Cloud Summit this morning, I donned the blazer again, even though I know it'll scare people away since they often don't want to talk to sales folks. Why? If people are still willing to talk to me even though I look like a scary sales person, I can be more confident that ATLAS is solving a real problem and that we've nailed our messaging. (This is the same thinking underlying Jessica Livingston's advice for early startups to focus on sales, not marketing.) If the conversations fall flat, I can drop the blazer, which makes discovery-style conversations easier since folks won't be too scared to chat. Finding PMF is about operating in these two different modes at conferences and everywhere else.

When we got into the cloud cost optimization market the reaction I heard was that is a business that doesn't have strong renewal rates. Spoiler alert.... If there is one thing I learned from my experience at Tableau, it was that if you listen intently to your customers and ensure they get value from their investment in your software it was the key to our long-term success. I am happy to say in our first year over year at Caliper we achieved a 95%+ retention rate with our final customers for the year renewing early today. In fact, more than half our customers we signed last year have now expanded giving us a net dollar retention of over 250%+ pointing to the value we are creating for them driving savings in their cloud. Snowflake should at least tell us what bugs they are fixing and what features they are working on in snowflake managed Polaris. It will helps us to prepare .. For example: add_files, register_table procedure are not working. I know snowflake team is working on it but no info to community. Some of these features essential to move on from PoC to prod. This is going to be huge! Data warehouse solutions like Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, BigQuery are all incredible tools when leveraged correctly, and truly have an immense capacity for unlocking cross-functional insights. However, a huge limitation is how accessible those are when GTM teams are in the thick of the day-to-day operations. Various Mar-Tech data stored in reports in separate tabs, failed attempts to bring in usage data to a CRM, you name it. There was always potential for highly customized tailored outbound messages, nurturing sequences, expansion aspirations due to data that could be utilized, but more often than not companies felt this disjointed cobbled together approach to not just find needed relevant data, but actually streamline the use of it to be very cumbersome. This new Zero Copy Partner Network is going to remove the need for reverse ETL and traditional data integrations into Salesforce so now all of a sudden, things just got a whole lot sexier for your Revenue Operations teams and the kinds of campaigns and strategies they can now pursue at scale!

11 years ago, Chris Degnan joined Snowflake as their first sales rep. Back then, they had no customers and no revenue. Today, Chris Degnan is Snowflake's CRO. And the company is an absolute juggernaut: - $2.81B in revenue, growing at 35.86% YOY. - A global team of over 7,000 employees, including 2,500+ sales reps. Here's some lessons we can take from Snowflake on how to build the foundation of a scalable GTM function: 1) Hire the right Head of Sales and give them latitude to discover your market In the early stages, a head of sales shouldn't focus on revenue. Their goal is to identify the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). During his first year, Chris aimed for 8 customer meetings a week. Initially targeting the largest companies, he soon realized they were not early adopters. After several discussions, he pivoted to focus on cloud-friendly companies with native apps. This fine-tuned Snowflake’s approach to targeting the right customers. 2) Integrate customer feedback directly into the development process Chris's initial outreach was designed to collect market feedback. Every Friday, he compiled insights from that week’s customer meetings and shared them with the entire company. The CEO and engineering team leveraged this data to guide product development. This strategy was pivotal in achieving product-market fit before advancing their market strategy. 3) Educate customers before advancing to the purchasing stage Snowflake’s sales team embraced an "adopt before buying" model to ensure customers recognized the product’s value. Chris’s approach was straightforward: "Try it out. If you like and use it, then pay for it." This method mitigates the risk of overselling, which can lead to high churn rates—a common challenge from seed to Series A. 4) Scale the team based on data-driven insights Snowflake’s sales team was guided by demand signals. Chris’s first three hires were: 1 intern to help him build demand generation. 2 sales reps to manage the emerging demand. Initially, he divided the country into three regions, each managed by one of these team members. As specific regions showed increased demand, he scaled the team accordingly.
