So if you see a role and think, "that feels low" or "should I ask for more" - here's your answer. ***I recognize everyone's situation is different, we all take jobs for different reasons, every market/industry is different, etc.*** Sharing this because there is not enough open conversation around salary and compensation. Don't be afraid to ask what the salary band is (they have one). Don't feel like an offer is final—there's always room for negotiation. Don't be afraid to ask for what you're worth (you're worth it). And don't feel like you have to settle. It's ok to talk away. Now get that dough 💸 🤑 💰

Event Marketing/Planning, gets you face to face with your prospects/clients, to influence their buying decisions. It's nice to work for companies that value face to face interactions. The most powerful tool in the marketing kit.

I have seen a lot of postings recommending that job seekers ferret out who the hiring manager is for a role and then contact them directly through LinkedIn or other. IDK but I would not advise that path. I may be the outlier here but as a hiring manager I really really don't want random people that my recruiting team has not vetted - that I DO NOT KNOW - reaching out. The truth for me is that I trust my recruiting team as the front line. I value their experience and knowledge and we are partners. By circumventing the process and connecting to me randomly on LI you are likely not helping your chances. I'm not going to think you are 'scrappy' or a go-getter.... That said - if you have a network connection that we share or that works at my company and you want them to reach out on your behalf I am good with that.

Tech writers & knowledge managers: If you are continually producing help articles or "KBs" full of "FAQs," then your documentation is incomplete and likely hard to use. You need to do a thorough review and update. If readers really are frequently asking similar questions, the answers to those questions should be in the main body of your help content. If that makes your article too long, then review your plan and create multiple articles that are clearly named and appropriately linked. Also, don't include an "FAQ" section on a capability that has just been released. If it's brand new, then it's clear to the reader that there have been no "frequently asked" questions about it. Just call the section what it is: "stuff we couldn't figure out how to / didn't have time to put in the content set we planned for this release." Instead of confronting readers with incomplete documentation and a bunch of FAQs that puts the burden on the reader to sort through, suggest search terms-- or if it's an option for you-- AI prompts that they can use to mine your content for the answers unique to them, answers for the questions that they really want to ask. Studying what terms/prompts readers are actually using can help you find gaps in your documentation set so you can continually update and improve it.

Tell me how you create content from a press release. Ummm, what? I was asked this question by a Comms exec in an interview once. Thinking back now, I should have asked them what the topic would be about. My first reaction was that it was an odd question because I don’t create content based on a press release. Comms is an important partner as we create full-funnel content marketing plans to support a company’s strategic goals. Comms is at the table when we discuss our strategies and tactics to meet these goals. Everyone knows who's creating what, where it's being amplified and distributed, and how it's being measured. I’m not creating content based on a press release. I’m creating content that supports and complements Comms’ goals of amplifying thought leadership, which ladders up to the company's business and strategic goals. It’s not a handoff from creating the press release to creating a blog post. I guess I didn’t answer correctly because I didn’t get the job. 🤷‍♀️ This post was inspired by Becca Chambers ✨ post about Comms professionals being asked to “spin up a press release” (link in comment 👇 )

Y'all, events are exhausting. The prep and planning, setting up the booth, scheduling meetings, early mornings, late nights, unwrapping swag, setting up tech, prepping the team, talking to customers and partners—the list goes on. It can be extremely tiring. 😴 But despite my sleepiness, I feel so energized after leaving INBOUND. Being fully remote, I found the in-person conversations invigorating—especially the ones that started with, 'We LOVE using Typeform!' The enthusiasm was contagious. ✨ The beauty of events lies in the power of real, face-to-face conversations. I could dig deep with customers, truly understand their various use cases, and empathize with the hurdles they face at work. I was able to realize the full impact we’re making on our customers with our product. Because of these genuine connections, I’m leaving with a refreshed sense of purpose as we dive into 2025 planning. (PS- where'd 2024 go, exactly? 😅)

Writing is so much fun...until you’re hit with feedback from 10 different directions, and everyone has a different opinion. Tough isn't it? Finding your way through all that while still being expected to take everything "constructively" can be exhausting. How can we cut out the noise? At some point, you start to ask: how much feedback is too much feedback? And do we really need to accept it all?

Let’s talk tools. Tools you need to do your job (and do it well). ✏️ We understand why finance needs Excel. ✏️ Why marketing needs Hubspot. ✏️ Why sales needs Salesforce. ✏️ Why creative needs Adobe. ✏️ Why IT needs ServiceNow. ✏️ Why legal needs Docusign. ✏️ And why HR needs Workday. But tools for communications professionals? Those are a "nice to have." 🫠 Why? Why aren't comms tools considered a necessity for doing our jobs? I can rattle off 10 tools that would make my teams 10x more effective, but I can also count on one hand the number of times I've been able to 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 those tools to my team to use. 👉 Internal comms tools 👉 External comms tools 👉 Analyst relations tools 👉 Social media tools 👉 Creative tools 👉 Monitoring and analytics tools #Communications pros, like other job functions, also need tools to do our jobs well. And in 2024—there are 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 tools available to us! But often those are out of reach for smaller, scrappier comms teams and are only available to the big companies with big #comms and #PR budgets. It's a shame because the communications landscape is changing, and our strategies 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 should change with it. Unfortunately, our budgets don't reflect this new reality. 🫣 So, wise network: Why are comms tools considered "nice to have" if we actually want our communications strategies to be effective? What tools do you use in your comms roles?

I’d be happy to hear some responses to a couple of questions that I have for myself. 1. What does work/life balance look like? 2. What should be some non-negotiables when deciding on an employer. 3. How important are the benefits/PTO/Sick time/Mental Health Days/freedom/flexibility? 4. What kind of work culture makes you happy/productive? 5. How important is it to have approachable, dependable, knowledgeable leadership? 6. Does remote/in office matter? 7. How important is training to you, if you have experience already? 8. How important is trust?

Friendly reminder that meetings count as work! I know people will sometimes quip that they didn’t get any work done as they weee just in meetings all day, but those meeting are the work! If you have meetings that feel pointless, review them. Do you need to attend? Does the meeting need to be shorter? Does the meeting need a clearer agenda or structure? Does the meeting need someone to be in charge of keeping it on track? #meetings #neurodivergent

Back-to-school looks different for all parents. For me, gone are the days of my kids integrating into their elementary / high school communities. Now, back-to-school is sending my youngest off in his car to 3rd year Uni hoping he drives carefully, arrives safely, and gets home safely. All parents are experiencing this back-to-school time differently. If a parent is on your team, have grace as they get through what can be a first time in full day elementary school, to first day in high school, to organizing the crazy drop off / pick up schedules that never seem to align with working hours. #workingparents #backtoschool

Tl;dr: In 2024, people appreciate reminders! 😀 I'm the person who's always worried that he's bugging others too much and/or is sending too many follow-ups or reminders. 👍 And there may be times that I *really* am the person who pushes too hard but I'm realizing more and more that in a world where people get hundreds of emails, messages, multi-platform pings, etc. each day, they often appreciate (not just "don't resent" but appreciate) people who send reminders and follow-up on messages they may have missed or forgotten. 😎

This is what employers ACTUALLY care about when hiring the best product marketing manager for their company 👇 1. 👻 Ambiguity Management: Can you quickly apply strategic thought and process to a ***huge*** gray area? 2. 🤸‍♀️ Flexibility: As you collect feedback and reporting on the product, you may learn that the math ain't mathing after all ( 😫 )...What you originally planned may have to be tweaked, or completely reworked. You gotta learn to accept this without losing your marbles. 3. 📈 GTM Success: You'll need to prove that you're intimately familiar with competitive analysis, identifying market gaps, and product launch timing and execution. How do YOU take a product from proof-of-concept to real life? 4. 👷‍♂️ ➡ 👩‍💻 Pipeline Creation: So, you know what the endgame is. It's your job to implement the "how", and get **every** team motivated, aligned, and focused. 5. 😤 😁 Stakeholder Management: Managing expectations while keeping everyone happy is a seriously underrated skill--especially when we're talking about the ones who cut the checks. 😅 Interviewing can be tough, especially if you're unsure what interviewers are actually curious about.
