Hope for Recovery: Effective Treatments for PTSD People with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have strong reasons to hope for recovery, thanks to effective treatments. Karestan Koenen professor of psychiatric epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, emphasizes the availability of trauma-informed therapies that can lead to significant improvement. In a recent interview on WBUR, Koenen shared her personal journey with PTSD following a sexual assault, and how therapy played a crucial role in her recovery. “Something everyone should know is that we do have treatments for PTSD that work. They’re called trauma-informed therapies. And you can get better,” she said. Koenen also recommends utilizing national hotlines for additional support and resources. Her research explores the genetic links to trauma, suggesting that understanding these pathways could lead to new treatments and preventive interventions. We made this a closed event to explore our experiences and thoughts together as in-depth as 1.5 hours will allow. We are planning an open event soon on the same topic so that we can share some of our thoughts with a larger group and hear diverse perspectives from those in attendance. Having these rich, elevated discussions with colleagues and friends in the mental health space is as important to me as having friends I can dance with, joke with, go on hikes with, shoot pool with, see comedy with, eat with, call at difficult times. Between elder care, education, and mental health I’ve been in service professions for some 25 years. I’ve seen a lot of burnout and experienced some. I’m convinced many of us need discussions like this to stay well and engaged in the work. Also, sneak peak. . . School refusal is more common than many realize, affecting between 1% to 5% of school-aged children, according to Dr. Sid Khurana, Co-Founder of Nevada Mental Health. Understanding the underlying causes of this behavior is crucial for parents who want to help their children overcome it. For young children, it's normal to feel anxious about attending school for the first time, especially if they share a strong bond with their parents, which can lead to significant separation anxiety. In some cases, this anxiety can escalate to outright refusal to go to school—a behavior that can manifest at various ages. **Mental Health Crisis Among Youth: We Need to Do Better** Hot off the JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association press, a recent cohort study of 1.7 million children, adolescents, and young adults in Southern California reveals a concerning rise in mental health diagnoses between 2017 and 2021. The study found: -Depression incidence increased by 55.6%, with a 60% rise in prevalence. -Anxiety without depression incidence rose by 31.1%, with a 35.2% rise in prevalence. -significant increases were observed across all age, gender, race and ethnicity, estimated household income, weight status, and comorbidity subgroups. Key disparities emerged: -Highest rates were seen among ages 14-22, females, non-Hispanic White, American Indian/Alaska Native youth, and those from higher-income households or with weight-related comorbidities. COVID-19 had a significant impact, accelerating these trends. This data underscores the urgent need for increased mental health services to support our youth.
