Navigating the Challenges of the Job Market in IT Service Delivery After 15 years of experience in IT service delivery, overseeing complex projects, leading teams, and driving operational excellence, I find myself in an unexpected and humbling position. Over the past several months, I’ve applied to over 200 roles across the country—willing to relocate, adapt, and bring my expertise to new organizations—but the opportunities just haven’t come together. The job market for IT Service Delivery Manager roles feels more competitive than ever, and like many, I’m facing the frustration of putting effort into tailored applications, interviews, and follow-ups without the results I’d hoped for. This process has been a stark reminder of the resilience and perseverance required in times like these. It’s also a call for self-reflection, networking, and leveraging every avenue of opportunity. If you’re in the same position, I want you to know you’re not alone. I have been in the healthcare IT industry for a couple of years now and have worked with some of the most intelligent and highly experienced people, but in the EMR/EHR world, experience and intelligence doesn’t sometimes get you the job; certification does. My question is why would a hospital hire a person with Epic certification but has no practical experience with the system and not someone who has trained the system and provided support as an ATE? Epic ATEs are the real MVPs (the experienced/knowledgeable ones), they know all the back doors, they can troubleshoot a broken build, they know what the system is supposed to do (different with each hospital’s build) and most times when they call the help desk, they end up advising the analysts (those with build experience) what they might do to help resolve the tickets. So dear hospitals and recruiters bringing on someone without a certification but heavily experienced is not all the way a bad thing. Stop being stuck with “10 years experience and 5 Epic certification a must” #ATE #EMRlife #Golives #EPIC #Cerner
