Yesterday I had dinner with ~20 impressive founders ($100MM+ in enterprise value!). 😮 And most were surprised to know beforehand I was sweating bullets....😟 One of the best parts of living in NYC is getting the opportunity to meet amazing founders, building in spaces that may have no connection to yours. One started a viral AI girlfriend doing over $2MM in profit, someone sold two businesses to publicly traded companies, another created the worlds largest Minecraft server. My friend Andrew Yeung throws these incredible dinners for founders where there are REAL conversations and NO selling. (Refreshing I know) And over the years I've been to many networking type events. But what most don't realize is even though I may seem calm and collected on the outside, before these events, I'm usually very nervous. Until I DM'd Nick Gray who told me 4 things about how to tackle these events and feel more yourself. 1. Show up EARLY - open up your google maps, see the time it will take to reach, and double it. Thats when you should start. To kick the anxiety of meeting people starts with going there well before time. 2. Meet the organizers - they WANT everyone to have a good time! When you go early, ask them if you can help with anything, and get to know them as people. 3. Understand WHY are you anxious - for me, a lot of this has to do with how I want to be perceived. I didn't want to be the guy who was standing by himself, with his drink. And that's ok and totally normal to feel! But understanding WHY you are feeling anxious is important to find a way to overcome it. 4. It's totally fine to join in on a conversation - a simple "can I join you all?" is all it takes to now jump into the mix. *Bonus* 5. If this is how you are feeling, think about how YOU can make someone feel more comfortable! See someone standing by themselves? Go talk to them! Remember that it is no ones intention to make you feel excluded. But YOU need to make connecting with others a priority. Are you nervous before meeting new people? What tips help ease the anxiety?

One thing I constantly feel like I'm saying is that the Southeast is growing and you can feel the momentum here within the early-stage tech community. But it's one thing to talk about the ecosystem - it's another thing when there's data backing it up. Last week, Embarc Collective and Build In SE dropped the Southeast Capital Landscape 2024 Report, and wow... We're seeing 38% growth in new VC firms creating a presence in the Southeast over the past 3 years. But what really gets me excited? Seeing the Startup Flywheel in Motion: Mandiant's acquisition (now part of Google Cloud) led to a new cyber-security VC firm, and Red Hat alumni co-founded unicorn Pendo. io. This isn't just growth. We gathered dozens of operators from the MGMT Boston Operators Club and local founders alongside the 186 Ventures team this October to discuss the evolution of our dear software markets, the status of some predictions for 2024 (all looking good!), and what’s on deck for next year. General Partner Giuseppe Stuto led us through the following predictions for 2025 to share with you all.. ↕ We will see more vertical AI applications manifest themselves within the Enterprise in a similar ways that SaaS moved from horizontal to vertical use cases 🔔 We will see services business models more common and software budget purchasing models less common - SaaS may even be given away for cheap/free as a “way in” ⚖ Capital efficiency, on a relative basis, will almost be required to create enduring & compounding defensible enterprise value. Details like procurement cycle lengths and creativity with non-dilutive financing, like leveraging revenue based financing tools for example, will all matter 💡 Specific to AI, premiums will be placed on applications that can actually get “reasoning” right. All purpose LLMs still have a ways to go and there are multiple approaches with the “jury still out” on how to get context and reasoning right. Infrastructure solutions that use general purpose or customizable knowledge graphs to help application developers get to 100% (enterprise acceptable accuracy) will emerge OR savvy application developers will fill the gaps themselves.
