You know we're all about innovation, but we are so disheartened reading about the way in which Georgia has become a kind of conservative laboratory for Medicaid. People are getting kicked off and, in other cases, asked to fulfill work requirements that feel downright cruel in the context of aging Americans who need help. Thank goodness the current administration halted similar efforts in about a dozen other states, preventing untold suffering. If we need Medicaid to be less onerous, let's not take it away from the people who need it most; let's put the country's best design talent at work looking at how to eradicate efficiencies in the application and reimbursement system, and other adjustments that would make its administration less costly and the user experience more humanizing. https://lnkd.in/gSvTF-Qx

Today marks an important milestone with Emory Healthcare’s announcement of their statewide PHC and collaboration with Guidehealth. We began our commercial relationship with Emory Healthcare Network earlier this year on an interim basis and quickly progressed by fully integrating our technology and capabilities. In a short time, our joint efforts have created “speed to value”, demonstrating considerable traction and early wins on quality, patient care and overall performance. Full Medicaid expansion needed to retain Georgia’s physicians Georgia was ranked 5th worst place to practice in a recent Medscape article (“Best and Worst Places to Practice 2024”), using five criteria: physician compensation, cost of living, malpractice premiums, the health of the state’s residents, and physician burnout levels. As current and future physicians and health advocates, this column will add context by detailing our experiences practicing in Georgia. It is no surprise that three of the five worst-ranked states for practicing are among those that have not expanded Medicaid. In Georgia, refusal to expand Medicaid means that nearly 12 percent of residents (well over a million people) are uninsured, significantly limiting their access to healthcare. Only in Texas is coverage worse. Due solely to political concerns, Georgia chose to submit a Medicaid waiver and develop its own Medicaid expansion program, Pathways to Coverage. The governor’s office projected that the program would cover an additional 100,000 Georgians in its first year. But it has been an utter failure, with fewer than 3,500 covered at a cost to taxpayers of $26 million. Full Medicaid expansion would have added over 350,000 Georgians while cutting state spending by $710 million. These three states that refused to expand Medicaid are not surprisingly red. It is also unsurprising that the states with the greatest percentage of unhealthy residents are red. Hopefully, Georgia who thought they had a better way of expanding access to care with their own plan that squandered $26 million to cover 3,500 residents will realize that retaining physicians requires a more sensible approach to expanding access to care. #expandinghealthacess, #accesstocare, #limitingcoveragetoresidents https://lnkd.in/eefqH-9Y

Opportunistic part II of "How does a #digitalhealth company get on NPR." Someone did a dang fine job of working with Andrea Hsu to find the humans behind the employers and the technology (not me, but kudos to all ...). Let's look at what this story has: 1) Humans. Stories aren't stories without a human element. Every reporter pitched is going to ask "can I talk to someone living this." 2) National context. Look at the stories Andrea links to. The experiences of a couple of individuals at one company are contextualized within national childcare and employment trends, and within recent news about federal efforts to get more help for working parents. 3) Willing sources. Mazda North American Operations was willing to be interviewed, willing to pull back the curtain on their broader policies, and the company likely helped find employees open to sharing their stories. That's why your PR agency is always asking, "do you have a client who would talk about this." 4) Data. 112 Mazda employers got a childcare stipend, and "over the first year it was offered, attrition dropped by 11% overall and 20% among women." Someone probably pitched this data early on to suggest the impact of better childcare approaches. If you have data, you have "new news." 5) Technology context that also shares more stories. TOOTRiS opened up an avenue to inteview users on multiple sides of their childcare marketplace. And their CEO had a concise, lay-language description of why what they do matters. 6) A news "hook." That's the time factor that makes a reporter want to publish today, not in a month or two. Here, the reporter mentions an Alabama childcare tax credit for businesses that goes into effect Jan. 2025. NPR is doing its news job by showing companies what childcare options can look like in time for them to take action to claim those credits. It's a compelling story with all those human elements, right?? And you have an idea that if you're an Alabama company, you might want to think about some of these actions (and vendors) in time to use that tax credit. This is excellent, functional news. How do you make these stories if you're a digital health company? They're in your progress reports to clients. If someone has a great success, ask if they're willing to share it. And then remember the story isn't about either you or them. Find the humans. Find the context. Find the data. Find the hook. Interesting perspective on #TechnologicalDebt in health care by Dave Lamar focused on the provider market, but we seem the same issues within state depts and payers. While good data governance practices are key, there must be a better way to solve this common - if not universal - challenge in health care, if only by offloading some of the administrative responsibilities that require the individual management and administration of no-value-add administrative functions. #healthdata
