How can brands effectively handle recovery messaging after a service failure to maximize brand loyalty? My coauthors Ganga Hewage, Ph.D., FCIM, Lam An, Jonathan Hasford and I explored the influence of visual messaging cues in our recent publication at the Journal of Service Research. Our studies show more favorable consumer behavior and increased loyalty intentions with the right visual communication. Awesome. Our 2023 JSR paper about “Corporate Digital Responsibility in Service Firms and Their #Ecosystems” became a finalist for the 2024 AMA-EBSCO-RRBM Award for #Responsible Research in Marketing. In the 50th anniversary special issue of the Journal of Consumer Research, we (Joseph Ryoo, Margaret (Meg) Campbell, J. Jeffrey Inman and myself) analyze the impact of articles published in leading consumer research journals by investigating the factors that influence their scholarly, public, and practical significance. This conceptually distinguishes between “incongruent novelty” (novelty arising from incongruity between an article and other existing articles) and “recombinant novelty” (novelty based on drawing from more disparate references). Incongruent novelty is decomposed into two components: (1) topic incongruity—incongruity between an article's topic and other existing topics at the time and (2) article incongruity—incongruity between an article and other existing articles on the same primary topic. By integrating topic modeling and word embedding to measure these constructs, we demonstrate varying impacts of types of novelty on three types of impact. Our findings illustrate that topic and article incongruity have effects above and beyond recombinant novelty. For both scholarly and public impact, our results suggest that moderately high topic incongruity has the largest influence, suggesting that researchers should address novel topics. Additionally, scholarly citations are positively affected by lower and higher (vs. moderate) levels of article incongruity, suggesting that researchers either engage in programmatic research or add a new approach to the existing research on a topic. New paper open access in Marketing Theory on the potential of ambiguous place brands with The Wild Atlantic Way as a key example. We argue that a capacity to embrace ambiguity allows market actors to accommodate the symbolic, dialectical and dynamic nature of place brands. Polymarket "predictors": less reading the tea leaves, more watching the news. Benzinga reports: "Walz was the punters' favorite before the start of the debate, leading with a 72% probability of a win on the cryptocurrency-based prediction market." That market? "Polymarket, built atop Ethereum’s Layer-2 chain, Polygon has gained prominence as one of the world's top prediction markets for U.S. elections in recent months, though ironically, U.S. users can't access the platform due to federal regulations." If you believe US users have not been able to access Polymarket, I have an island to sell you... on a blockchain of course. But how goes the theory of the wisdom of the crowd with their pocket books on the line? 🤔 "However, the odds fell dramatically as the debate began, plunging below 50% an hour into the face-off. As of this writing, the odds were comfortably in favor of the Republican at 69%. More than $850,000 was wagered for the outcome." Or as the Financial Times reports (https://on.ft.com/3ZOufPT): "Political betting site Polymarket gave Walz a 70 per cent chance of winning at the start of the debate. By the end he was at just 33 per cent." So basically Polymarket punters learnt to actually watch the debate before making up their minds? 🤷🏻 I suppose if you allowed punters to bet on horses just before one crosses the finish line, you'd find their odds dramatically improving too. When we think about the "impact" of technology on firms and workers, we need to go beyond standard performance measures such as productivity to understand how the basic organization of production may transform. Why? Because one of the things we take as a basic of measurement, e.g., "firms," shift their boundaries in response to technological change. Chris Forman and I have a new Management Science paper showing how the internet reduced vertical integration among U.S. Manufacturing firms. I don't think this is what *always* happens with digital transformations, and we need to be precise about what a given technology does and what margins it influences. Often, it can be multiple margins at once, which is why I am not a fan of "x technology will cause y outcome" statements or predictions. A key contribution of our study was gaining visibility to many things that the internet shifted -- and carefully disentangling countervailing influences.

Our conference paper, presented at the 5th MTCON, is now available: Placebo or Nocebo? A Conceptual Misunderstanding in Consumer Behavior Research The convergence of a series of complex factors shapes consumers' purchasing decisions. Some of these factors reside within individuals' subconscious. Therefore, understanding consumer behavior requires examining the features of products and services and the assessments that take place within the consumer's mind. In this context, the placebo effect merits consideration. Commonly recognized in medicine, the placebo effect is now being explored beyond its traditional boundaries, finding application in marketing and tourism marketing to enhance understanding of consumer behavior. This study addresses how the placebo effect can be interpreted in relevant research and discusses its impacts on consumers' perceptions and behaviors. A literature review conducted within this scope has revealed that many studies contain conceptual issues and there is a misunderstanding about the placebo effect. Therefore, we first defined placebo and nocebo –terms from medical pharmacology– before offering a definitive interpretation of the placebo effect. Following the critical paradigm, this study has revealed the conceptual issues and logical flaws in the relevant literature, provided a significant perspective on the field of consumer behavior, and contributed to future research investigating the placebo effect in tourism. New paper alert! Our lab has been interesting in consumer preferences for hybrid foods. In our newest study, Likhitha Marlapati explored how hybrid yogurt compares to dairy and plant-based versions. This was a online conjoint analysis study, using hypothetical products, aiming to determine the product features that drive consumer choice. Based on the findings, dairy was valued similarly to hybrid. #futurefood #sustainability #consumerinsights #foodscience #consumer

What is at the core of all good research? A puzzle! I could not agree more with the AMJ editors' newly published research canvas, which places identifying and solving a puzzle at the center of management research. This is true whether the research is quantitative or qualitative. However, as I lay out in my 2021 AMR paper with Michel Anteby and Audrey Holm, then in qualitative research this puzzle should come from a deep engagement with the empirical data. Happy to announce my first-ever academic publication, "The Enrichment Economy: Market Dynamics, Brand Strategy, and Ethics", in the Journal of Marketing. Access to the paper: https://lnkd.in/e7UFzejt. #Watches, designer #sneakers, top-notch leather #bags, and many other #luxury goods create massive enrichment opportunities for consumers if they resell them on #secondhand markets. This trend is part of the #enrichment #economy, a new economy where consumers convert exquisite goods into financial capital. Our new study, with Delphine DION and Sonja Prokopec, explains how the enrichment economy works in the luxury watch market, where the enrichment economy has been soaring for years. We find that the enrichment economy follows a logic distinct from conventional markets. Acquiring a luxury watch with high financial potential is an Enrichment Privilege open to a handful of wealthy and powerful consumers handpicked by the brands. This resembles the Royal Privilege, where the courtesans of old strived to outcompete each other for the King’s favor. We introduce the Enrichment Strategy as a novel brand #strategy that #luxury brands can use to deliver unprecedented value while staying ethical and consumer-friendly.

I just returned from a two-week trip to China with Columbia Business School. We had great meetings with executives from fascinating firms such as Ant Group, BYD, Tencent, Meituan, and Walmart/Sam’s Club China, to name just a few. The trip was extremely informative and highlighted the innovation potential of China's leading companies. In terms of work culture, the contrast to the U.S. or Europe was stark. While there is a noticeable shift in the attitude of young workers in China and Asia in general (as discussed in this week's Economist), most executives we met did not seem focused on this change, and I did not detect a shift in leadership style—at least, not yet. However, as economic growth slows (leading to slower career and wage growth as a motivating tool) and higher wealth levels shift preferences towards leisure and work-life balance, companies will need to manage their workforce differently. Good news for me: The Employee Advantage (https://lnkd.in/eyVaYXFR), could have a huge impact in China … if translated into Chinese 😉!
