A mistake a lot of us make is assuming that for breakthrough innovation, we need to find that one good idea. But if Jeremy Utley is to be believed, more ideas lead to better outcomes. Utley, Director of Executive Education at the Stanford d.school and co-author with Perry Klebahn of Ideaflow: The Only Business Metric That Matters, challenges the common perception that one good idea is the key to success. He explains why. RB: You define the idea as a “connection”. Why? JU: My study of the underlying neuroscience has led me to realize that an idea is a bridge between two things already in your mind. The conventional view of ideas as coming from nowhere or being built from nothing lacks practicality and is not helpful. When you hold onto such thinking, you're essentially searching for something to materialize from nothing – this is not beneficial in terms of operating... RB: How can we successfully manage the inputs we receive from outside to maximize the impact we achieve? Inputs are important. Many people who aspire to lead a creative life or fail to recognize the value of that tend to focus solely on problem-solving. When you think about that, you're often concerned with the output. But what's the answer? The brain's just like anything else. When we consider the outputs of our thinking, we realize that they depend on the inputs we receive. Therefore, we call this kind of thoughtfulness about a deliberate pursuit of input inspiration. Unlike those of us from corporate environments, that is a design word that means something. When change is the only the constant, the ability to be "in" the turbulence without letting it overtake you is vital for success. This guide from Wharton offers some excellent advice for navigating uncertainty by strategically managing workloads and priorities. It stresses the importance of maintaining a sustainable pace, making for breaks in the action and rest. I recently attended the #AllinSummit by All-In Podcast, which featured an epic debate between two brilliant minds, Jeffrey Sachs (Professor at Columbia University) and John Mearsheimer (Professor at the University of Chicago). Thank you for having the courage to speak uncomfortable truths, even when it’s unpopular. Kudos to the Besties (Jason Calacanis, David O. Sacks, Chamath Palihapitiya, and David Friedberg) for arranging such an important conversation. I had my reservations about political topics, but now I can see why you do what you do—this kind of discourse is invaluable. Cheers to all the work you put into making these discussions happen! To be clear, I’m not a U.S. citizen, so no voting here. But it’s critical that we open our minds and eyes to different perspectives. You don’t have to agree with everything—I certainly don’t—but that’s not the point. The point is to listen and consider alternative viewpoints. Today, we need more intentional dialogue, more openness to ideas that challenge us. Our future, our next generations, and our shared humanity depend on it. #AIS #Geopolitics

Thoughtful Monday read from Kellogg Insight -- We're all familiar with the concept of the gender pay gap at this point since the 1990s. However, new research from Nicola Bianci, assistant professor of strategy at Kellogg suggests that the relationship between men's and women's average #wages did indeed change in past four decades. The average man in the U.S. used to make 80% more than the average woman in 1976, and past over four decades, that gap has fallen to a 33%. Interestingly, there was no stark drop but rather a steady decline that has remained active for the long-term. So what's going on here? Some theorize that #older workers are retiring and newer workers are taking their place, relinquishing some higher paid positions. The reason why the 33% remains stagnant though, is because there's still a disproportionate amount of women in more "traditionally feminine" job positions rather than "male" careers. The Three Lessons I've Learned When I reflect on my career, it is unequivocally the paths less traveled that have had the most profound impact. Lesson 1: Embrace the Unexpected In 2008, I moved to London on the very day Lehman Brothers collapsed. My new job evaporated as the person who hired me was let go. Instead of despair, I found opportunity. I took a temporary position at The BMJ, where I met Dr Charles Young. Earning just £10 an hour, I worked with his team as a publishing assistant, exploring decision science data for Point of Care. Our groundbreaking work was later licensed by epocrates, which became one of the largest healthcare databases in the world. Takeaway: Sometimes life doesn't go as planned. Just take the next best step; you might be surprised at the opportunities it opens. Lesson 2: Connect and Collaborate In 2012, I changed seats on a flight to my TRIUM Global Executive MBA and met Professor Marianne Winslett. During that flight, we connected and virtually commercialized everything in her lab. This led me to moonlight at the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC), where, fast-forward a decade, Marianne is now my esteemed partner at R3I CAPITAL and R3i Ventures. Together, we are changing the flows of capital in #appliedAI and #frontiertech investments for #climate, #water, and #healthcare impact. 306 founders accelerated cross border today via R3i Ventures! Collaborating with prolific VC Henry Wong and brilliant humans and inventors like Kyle Rupnow, Swathi Gurumani, Shaunak Ahuja, and Vasileios Vonikakis, we pioneered applied AI projects in robotics, surveillance, sports analytics, healthcare, and safety. Takeaway: Open your mind and truly connect with the person next to you. Genuine engagement can lead to incredible collaborations and intertwined lives. Lesson 3: Be Present Back in 1994, as a Queensland University of Technology student working as a palliative care nurse, I learned the importance of presence. Helping people in their final days taught me that what matters most is being present for those we love. Nobody cares about money or missed deals in their final moments; they only wish they had spent more time with loved ones. Robert Frost once said, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." Takeaway: Being present in the moment is what truly makes a difference in life. I'd love to hear from you! What unexpected turns in your career have led to new opportunities? Here’s a look inside my latest Innovators @ Visa session with Ron Adner, a leading authority on innovation and strategy.      We had such a compelling conversation. His point about shifting from an “ego-system” to an “ecosystem” mindset really resonated with me — clinging to old paradigms can blind us to emerging opportunities.       Dr. Adner also emphasized the importance of adaptability and understanding how to navigate the evolving boundaries of our ecosystems, and shifts into new ecosystems — or how to “play the right game.” Not only do we have to know what opportunities to go after, we have to strategize correctly for how to go after them.       Many technological and behavioral shifts are gradual, so we must remain vigilant to avoid becoming complacent. Businesses and individuals who have the courage to pivot are the ones who will succeed.       For Visa, there is a critical balance between leading and playing a supportive role to our clients and partners, across the ecosystems we operate in. It was encouraging to hear this alignment in philosophies as I believe collaboration is a driving force for success.       Thank you, Dr. Adner, for a fantastic discussion.
