Lori Curry from Missouri Prison Reform spoke to KSDK - 5 On Your Side about how the state corrections department is understaffed, with an 18% vacancy rate, and how corrections officers are being pushed to their limits, leading to increased turnover and staff burnout.    Correctional facilities in Missouri are failing to address ongoing issues of understaffing, abuse, accountability . In a significant step towards justice reform, the Metro Council has approved a new budget to strengthen Nashville’s indigent defense system. This includes funding for additional staff at the Public Defender’s Office and launching the Indigent Defense and Excellence in Advocacy (IDEA) program. 🔹 Addressing the Strain: Both public defenders and appointed private attorneys have long struggled with heavy caseloads and limited resources, affecting the quality of representation for defendants who cannot afford an attorney. 🔹 Advocacy and Excellence: Esteemed Nashville attorneys Jodie Bell and Dawn Deaner’s IDEA project aims to create a model similar to the federal level, improving funding, support, and vetting of attorneys representing indigent defendants. (Full disclosure, AKI has worked with both of the attorneys and highly recommends them to anyone needing representation in Nashville.) 🔹 Budget Boost: The new budget allocates nearly $800,000 for staffing improvements and equipment for the Public Defender’s Office. It also puts $400,000 towards the IDEA program, aimed at enhancing the quality of representation for appointed attorneys. 🔹 Equal Representation: This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between public defenders and appointed attorneys, ensuring all defendants receive fair and adequate representation, regardless of their financial status. 🔹 A Step Forward: Martesha Johnson Moore, Metro Public Defender, emphasizes the importance of this move in providing equitable legal representation and addressing the systemic issues within Nashville’s justice system. Last week Impact for Equity and Free2Move Coalition Members attended a federal court hearing on including traffic stops into the consent decree's oversight of CPD.  "We heard a lot from community members and their concern with the structure of the consent decree and also their fear that including traffic stops into the consent decree will create stagnant progression," said Joi Imohbio with the group Impact for Equity, an organization that has researched CPD's use of traffic stops for years. The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant 📍 Its acronym is JAG, and it's under the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance. 📍States administer JAG funds to support criminal justice-related programs, practices, or initiatives. 📍State Administering Agencies (SAAs) submit a five-year strategic plan to guide the implementation of evidence-based policies and practices that are equitable, fair, and just. 📍ICJIA is Illinois' SAA. 📍ICJIA's budget committee recently awarded $168K and set aside $2.8M in JAG funding to support violent crime reduction and victim/witness protection. There are more than one million and nine hundred thousand people confined across US correctional institutions. There are three million and seven hundred thousand more people under community corrections – probation and parole. Combined, that’s over five million and six hundred thousand people who currently experience some type of carceral control. There are also several hundred thousand people working in the criminal legal system. People. People with complex stories. In our reflections of making a bigger impact in the next ten years, we realized that instead of starting any collaboration with framing the need for change, we must start with the acknowledgement of humanity. We cannot transform any system until we see humanity in each other. Now, we’re on a voyage to help systems transform themselves by first recognizing humanity in each other.
