This is a sketch I made early on before we even found and purchased the property where we would eventually open up Bella Groves, a dementia care and education center in San Antonio. The problem that many senior living operators face (especially those who focus on "aging in place") is providing adequate and ongoing training and learning frameworks for every employee to deeply understand dementia. Most dementia training is actually just a quick, one-time overview of definitions, metaphors, tips and/or standardized responses to generalized situations (i.e. "how to manage agitation"). While many organizations now employ dementia experts at a higher (corporate) level, the lack of learning infrastructure and resources keep that expertise concentrated to one level, or worse - to just one person. If a large multi-family (apartments) real estate company employed one yoga instructor (corporate director) and claimed that their organization's mission was to create a holistic, wellness community that strives to connect the body, breath and mind - how likely are you to believe they will execute this vision? Or are they really a real estate company that provides yoga as an amenity? There are a few places I drew inspiration to develop our first hypothesis about going all in on dementia education as the foundation of our resident experiences. 1. Learning & Development - I spent nearly 4 years of my senior living career solely focused on L&D. It gave me some real and working knowledge of how adults learn. It helped me understand concepts like the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, Kirkpatrick's levels of learning evaluation, Bloom's taxonomy, train the trainer, learning transfer and other important factors that incorporate the natural learning advantages and pitfalls of a social group (a company). 2. Business School - the two years I spent in an executive MBA program (after 10 years of experience in senior living) helped me understand and examine how businesses are formed, why they fail/succeed, and how great leaders lead. The 13-week cash flow model (TWCF) actually helped me think about examining critical factors in a 90-day cycle, except instead of looking at cash position relative to making critical decisions, our 13-week dementia onboarding looks at "knowledge" position or group capabilities to meet current resident needs. In other words, relative to our residents' current needs, where do we have knowledge gaps or where can we leverage knowledge strengths to arrive at optimal care outcomes? We call ours a methodology instead of a training, because we understand that all we really have is a strong hypothesis and that we must test, examine and iterate our model as we go. I named our methodology "Go With The F.L.O.W." or GWTF for short. It explores core principles rather than relying on step-by-step instruction or linear learning. You can call us a "standalone memory care facility" but that would be like buying a smart phone just to make calls.

My first Think Tank effort was in 2021, and we had maybe 15 people there. I LOVED it. Then 23 the next year. Then 30 the year after. Did you see The Dallas Morning News story featuring Prism Health North Texas receiving Federally Qualified Health Centers Look-A-Like status for providing medical services to underserved communities? Dr. John Carlo, CEO of Prism North Texas, shared that there are not enough sites in Dallas to meet all the county’s medical needs. However, while Prism has its South Dallas Health Center on Spring Avenue, the organization has struggled to open more medical sites particularly in other parts of South Dallas and Oak Cliff. WHY??? The City of Dallas Parking Code for medical clinics requires 5 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet. That means a 10,000 square foot clinic must have 50 parking spaces. That’s almost half an acre of land just for parking! Most Prism potential patients come from the surrounding neighborhoods or use public transportation and are less likely to drive. Yet, there are no easy parking variances for this situation. As a commercial real estate broker specializing in nonprofits, including Prism, I have represented many other nonprofits providing medical related services. ALL of them have had to factor in these outdated medical parking requirements when selecting sites for their clinics…adding unnecessary costs that could be better spent on providing critical services. I urge the Dallas Plan Commission to revisit the City of Dallas Parking Code to look beyond bars, restaurants and housing to reviewing other aspects of the Code that are creating unnecessary barriers to providing services to all the citizens of our City.

Today I attended the DFW Healthcare Connection networking event sponsored by Grand Brook Memory Care in Grapevine and Catherine Ledbetter of Alpha Omega Hospice. I learned some fascinating tidbits about longevity from William Hatfield of Grand Brook Memory Care. Grip and Leg Strength are good predictors of health and longevity. So, I did some further research because we all hope to stay in our own homes as long as possible. In order to do that, we have to be strong and healthy enough to remain there safely and perform activities of daily living. The Significance of Grip Strength and Leg Strength for Longevity Grip strength is a significant predictor of overall health and longevity. Research indicates that a strong grip is associated with slower biological aging, better overall muscle strength, and a lower risk of chronic diseases and mortality. Here are some key points about the importance of grip strength: 1. Indicator of Overall Health: Grip strength is a reliable indicator of a person's overall body strength, including the ability to fight infections and recover from diseases. It is linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. 2. Cognitive and Emotional Health: Weak grip strength has been associated with cognitive impairments, such as memory problems and slower processing speeds, as well as emotional health issues like depression. Maintaining a strong grip helps in preserving mental health and reducing the risk of cognitive decline. 3. This independence is crucial for maintaining a higher quality of life and reducing the risk of frailty. Leg strength is equally important for longevity and overall health. Here are some reasons why maintaining strong legs is vital: 1. Mobility and Balance: Strong leg muscles are essential for mobility and balance, which help prevent falls, a leading cause of injury in older adults. Improved leg strength contributes to better stability and coordination. 2. Functional Independence: Just like grip strength, leg strength supports functional independence by enabling older adults to perform activities like climbing stairs, walking, and standing up from a seated position. This independence is crucial for a higher quality of life. 3. Cardiovascular Health: Engaging in activities that strengthen leg muscles, such as walking, running, and resistance training, also promotes cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of heart diseases, and improves overall physical fitness. Maintaining both grip & leg strength through regular exercise can significantly enhance overall health, reduce the risk of diseases, and improve the quality of life as one ages.
