Member of the BTF Global Oncology Board Judy Delismon (RN, MN, OCN) wrote an abstract exploring the current state of oncology nursing education at the Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center (BTFCC) in Janakpurdham, Nepal. The abstract describes a pilot program in which "a needs assessment was gathered from seven nurses at the BTFCC. 🌟As healthcare professionals, we strive to provide equitable, patient-centered care to all our patients and caregivers. The data conveys that we don’t always hit the mark. 🎯 Patients with a non-English language preference (NELP) experience worse healthcare outcomes. It is our job to learn how we can do better. Rebecca Schwei, MPH and co-authors offer insights to impact this gap in their recent qualitative study exploring patient-centered care (PCC) experiences among Spanish-speaking patients in the emergency department (ED). Their research highlights that while many elements of PCC—like shared decision-making and open communication—are universally recognized, there are unique challenges and needs for patients with non-English language preferences (NELP). Consider the role of complexity not from the top down or the designer perspective, but from the bottom up - the patient and delivery team member perspective. You might see the increasing challenges of More to do (micromanagement, digitalization, regulation, certification) fewer team members (lower ratios) and lesser delivery team members (replacements of experienced team members by less experienced, made much worse by massive expansions of annual graduates as in NP PA and DO) ... to share the increasing complexity in many dimensions (patient, practice, community, relationships, environments, insurance quality poor made worse) ... and despite less time ... and despite disruptions of personal and professional lives ... that prevent best on on one innovation with each patient ... thus shaping moral injury, burnout, turnover, higher turnover costs, and even worse finances in practices and hospitals

In November of 2023, the US Surgeon General, Dr. Murthy, released a Public Health Report entitled "Physical Activity: An Untapped Resource to Address Our Nation’s Mental Health Crisis Among Children and Adolescents." In it, he talked about the benefits of exercise on youth mental health and named Girls on the Run as a positive example. The numbers speak for themselves. 97% of GOTR participants learn essential life skills at Girls on the Run – including managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others, or making intentional decisions. Our participants are also more likely to learn and use these types of skills than those in physical education or organized sports.
