There is nothing worse than having painted yourself into a corner, by building a Rube Goldberg machine. The years and years of cobbling solutions for fixes, new features, etc has your system not able to sustain its own weight anymore? Is your break/fix time more like your full 9-5 days? The good news is there are answers to that problem. One of our recent projects has been to use the Strangler Fix Pattern ( after the mentioned plant that supplants itself in the top of trees and slowly takes over the whole tree structure and replaces its now deceased host. A little morbid, but by replacing the monolith piece by piece you greatly reduce the risk and cost of failures. It also allows you to target the biggest value for the components being replaced.
