Big announcement below! 👇 Let's talk about the current state of GP-LP affairs: 🤯Emerging VC managers have absolutely exploded over the past 5 years. 📈 At the same time, more and more data has surfaced that shows that emerging VC firms tend to outperform larger, established firms. 🤔 All of this has made it intriguing but tough for LPs to know where to direct their attention. 🛍 GPs frequently meet LPs at conferences who are window shopping but not committed to the asset class or emerging managers. 🧾 And both crews get overwhelmed by transactional convos. So Sydney Paige Thomas and I created Abundance. Abundance is a private, nomination-based retreat for active LPs and top emerging GPs to form new experiences together and build lasting relationships. Why Abundance? Abundance is knowing that there is more than enough for more than one to succeed. And a single win within a community is a win for the community itself. The journey of an emerging VC manager from 1st close to final close or Fund 1 to Fund 2 is (1) communal and (2) requires an abundant mindset. LPs look for structure and confidence to feel comfortable investing in early VC firms. Yet many of the feeds we scroll and conferences we attend reinforce inherent power dynamics and transactional thinking, which allows scarcity mindset to creep in for emerging GPs. Some of the best events I’ve attended have been intentionally non-transactional, e.g. Camp Hustle, Recast Summit, and other GPs’ AGMs. The fundraising success stories we see usually involve a community (usually of other GPs & LPs) coming together to support and open doors for the emerging GP. We designed Abundance to be an immersive gathering that fosters these connections. Starting tonight, ~100 GPs and LPs are descending upon Seattle for the inaugural Abundance retreat. I used to work with Ethan Eismann and always admired his passion for craftsmanship and high-quality experiences. My main takeaways: ▀ There’s a real shift today toward making enterprise tools as high-quality as possible, creating fantastic work environments for employees. ▀ The best companies focused on quality blend roles and phases of building. ▀ They don’t spend too long defining something; they make a bet and start building and shaping (planning and building blended) ▀ Engineers, PMs, and designers collaborate in the design process, working together to refine the solution through prototyping and feedback (blending roles)

Why we're leaving 70% of potential revenue on the table. And why it might be the smartest business decision we've made. After our $130M exit with Olapic, we had a choice to make with Remotely. The traditional playbook was clear: - Optimize for maximum margins - Scale rapidly - Raise significant capital - Keep pricing opaque Instead, we chose a radically different path with Remotely. We did something "irrational": showed our customers exactly how much developers make. In an industry where companies typically pocket 70% of what customers pay, we decided to charge a transparent flat fee (that effectively makes our take rate at 18%). Everyone said we were crazy. "You're giving away margin!" Team San Diego! I though you may find this as surprising as I did...we are not alone. Read this quick article from Jon Prentice's (Silicon Valley Bank) interview with with James Newell (Voyager Capital), published in GeekWire on Seattle's innovation ecosystem....they lament the SAME issues as we do in San Diego: * Lack of angel investors, (Especially, it calls out, given the local giant tech co's) * "We need low-conviction check writers." * Lack of "cachet associated with being an angel investor" - We have similar efforts (as described in the article) to drum up angel activity: NuFund Venture Group and, Interlock Capital (read the article and you'll see why the Interlock effort is tops as relates to "paying back into the ecosystem") Connect.org strives to 'connect' innovative companies with investors of all types (angel, VC, PE...) - just see "Innovation Day". Note to all founders & teams: Many of us (myself included) have been impacted by the fires out here in Los Angeles this past week. Some have completely lost their homes, while others have been displaced, or at minimum on constant alert over the past few days. We've seen lots of fires out here, but the scale of this one is unprecedented. All of us know friends, family members, and/or colleagues that have been impacted over the past few days. It's very real. It's also been exhausting and we're all tired. We can all probably count the number of hours that we've slept over the past few days. Building startups is hard enough and this adds to the challenges on another level. If you're a founder, realize that you're probably exhausted and give yourself some grace. Your team probably is as well and will need this. If you're not in Los Angeles, please keep this in mind when trying to push for meetings or asks from those who are. Even if someone's house didn't completely burn down (which we hope is not the case), they might be living out of a hotel, have minimal sleep, and have much bigger concerns. Not only for themselves, but their family, friends, and loved ones. This is in addition to their startup and team. The next few weeks (and maybe months) are going to be trying for us all, but we'll get through it. Please just keep this in mind for those of us here as we battle through this and then try getting back to our normal lives and routines.

Reflecting on another fantastic StartupAZ retreat in Flagstaff last month! I’m grateful to be a part of this incredible community that continually supports technology founders in Arizona. StartupAZ is more than just a network; it’s a powerful ecosystem of founders, mentors, and seasoned entrepreneurs who come together to uplift and propel each other forward. At Forum we look at thousands of deals each year across our Accelerator and Pre-Seed funds but only end up investing in a little over 1% of those startups.  As an early stage VC, I am in the business of saying no to nearly every startup I meet, and while there is nuanced rationale for many of the startups I pass on, a vast majority of businesses that don’t meet the qualification to get funded typically fall into one of two buckets. ▪ First time founders have a tendency to go out to market too early to raise pre-seed capital ▪   I’m sure most founders have heard some iteration of this from VCs that ultimately pass on their business.  In some cases it's a blanket excuse covering up for other pass reasons- perhaps a VC doesn’t believe in a team or isn’t bullish on the market opportunity - but in many cases founders simply haven't proven enough to the market to warrant an investment. I meet many teams with an articulate vision for the product that they want to build, but they either haven't performed enough customer discovery to prove demand for their initial wedge product, or need to raise pre-seed capital to build out an MVP.  In those cases, pre-seed investors are unwilling to underwrite those risks.  To be default fundable, teams need to be able to keep costs low, perform extensive customer discovery, and ship some version of an early product - pilots and early paid customers are key. A huge piece of this is having founding engineering talent on the team. ▪Not every startup is a venture opportunity ▪ By definition, a venture backed business is solving a problem within a market opportunity so massive and so desperately needed, that its growth rate is off the charts.   It spreads like a weed, absorbing almost unlimited amounts of capital to fulfill demand within its customer base.   Each year there are maybe 20 companies launched that ultimately have venture scale outcomes. The bar to reach this rarified air is unfathomably high and the reality is the vast majority of founders simply aren’t building for opportunities that have the potential to be one of these generational companies. Many startup founders view VC as the only viable option for capitalizing their business, but not every great business is a venture business, and most successful founders never take VC dollars.  In order to reach an IPO/acquisition large enough to generate venture returns, a startup needs a credible path to $100s of millions in revenue. This is the standard by which early stage opportunities are evaluated. The flip side to this, and I share this feedback often with founders I meet that are building interesting business in non venture markets, if you are able to scale to $10- $20M in revenue that can be a massively successful outcome for a founder.  There are investors who focus on these type outcomes, namely lower middle market PE shops, and the typical path to those deals is a bootstrapped business or a friends/family capital raise.

There's never been a better time in human history to be a builder. 🚀 Here’s what I’m seeing on the ground talking to YC startups, solo founders, and investors in 2025: 1. Teams are leaner and plan to stay small. Many founders feel burned by bloated, ZIRP-era engineering practices. A big reason they started companies? To avoid those environments entirely. Small teams, big impact. 2. Shipping velocity is everything right now, and prototypes are king. AI tools like v01 and Loveable.dev let teams skip heavy steps like Figma mocks and wireframes. Example: Our (awesome) engineer Sami Junior Kahil rewrote our entire Turntable (YC W23) IDE over the holidays using Cursor totaling 10s of thousands of changed lines of code. Wild. 3. Founders are rethinking the Series A. Raising a Series A—once a founder signal of “making it”—is no longer a given. Many founders are staying scrappy, more fiscally conservative, and prepared to weather the storm without it. 4. Enterprise AI is having a moment. CTOs and CIOs are leaning into AI tools to move faster. We’re seeing 5-person startup teams landing pilots with Fortune 500s. The skepticism is fading; the pace is accelerating. 5. YC companies are scaling faster than ever. $XXM ARR in <12 months is becoming more common. Why? New software orchestrates broader workflows for companies. As agent workflows mature and ROI case studies circulate, I only see this trend continuing. 6. Distribution & GTM are more critical than ever. With dev costs dropping, startups are rushing to build distribution channels. Buzzwords in group chats: Clay.com, Instantly.ai, AI SDRs. Founders are figuring out how to scale distribution fast. It's no longer optional. 7. Founder-led content is everywhere. Founders are on TikTok, writing blogs, and making YouTube videos. It's a high-bandwidth way to build a brand, establish credibility, and discover pain points—at virtually no cost. Tools like Anthropic, ChatGPT, and Typefully make it easy to turn a single founder into a content factory. I’m excited to publicly share something that has been in the works for a few months at the 9point8 Collective. We’ve launched our Virtual Studio! This is a program for early-stage companies that provides the coaching, development and venture-building tools they need to find traction and scale. The program is modeled off of the venture-building processes found inside #VentureStudios, which have delivered 2X IRR and exit 45% faster than traditional #VC-backed #startups over the last 10 years. Some of the secret sauce to this is that studios have found a way to validate strategies early on, de-risk execution, preserve and extend limited runway, and create efficient business models very fast. We at 9point8 are seasoned studio builders and are on a mission to bring this value to founding teams as they navigate their startup journeys. What we’ve done with the Virtual Studio is distill these key processes and techniques, add in our own expertise and best practices, and package them into a program which meets start-ups where they are. Some midweek wisdom from Y Combinator founder, Paul Graham, on why startups shouldn't stress over competitors. According to Graham, based on Y Combinator's extensive data set, few of their startups are actually killed by competitors. He compares the protection a startup has against competitors to the vastness of space, emphasising that the market is large enough for multiple players to thrive. Graham's analogy likens encountering a competitor to suddenly finding another runner in your race lane - the best course of action? “It’s sort of like if you’re running the hundred meters and suddenly a lane appears with another runner in it.
