Reinvent the Lunch Break Conference Call for Working Parents: With your kids! Before you get instant anxiety or break out in hives, I know kids + zoom + parents is like a Covid hangover horror show of the very recent past that we still have scars from. But why can’t we reinvent the lunch meeting and make it a thing we do with our kids every Tuesday, because we all know Tuesday is easily the worst day of the week (long winded NYT OpEd coming soon on this topic). Parents of children who are under 10 know that by the time we pick them up they are, shall we say- not their best selves, and frankly neither are we, but lunchtime we could maybe get 10 full minutes to find out about their day and since they are hungry they will sit (essentially trapped) with you while eating (most likely complaining about the food you made/bought/in general). What if we normalized weekly lunch conference calls on zoom with our kids? We love them right, don’t see enough of their cute faces during the day. Can someone find a business case for this? I feel like there has to be one. The Mom Project, Moms First or some other parent forward group or a heartwarming Zoom marketing campaign has to have some pull to make this happen. It’s probably an objectively terrible idea with no logistical reasoning behind it… BUT… I would love to see their faces mid day when they are engaged and having a fun time at school and still have good energy. Rather than only ever seeing that tired cranky, whiny person aggressively asking for 72 snacks (BUT NOT THAT ONE MOMMY!!!!) after school. I would love to squeeze in a little more face time with those girls who are growing way too fast. #parents #parentinghacks #workingparents #businessideas #remotework

As a Human Resources leader I have been watching the "battle" over the ERA closely...for many decades (sadly). The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first introduced in 1923. In 2020 the required threshold of 38 states ratified the ERA into their state constitutions, making it eligible to be added as the 28th amendment to the US Constitution. The ERA aims to enshrine equal rights under the law for all genders, providing critical protections against sex-based discrimination in areas like employment, education, and healthcare. You can support the ERA by staying informed, advocating for its passage by contacting your representatives, supporting organizations like the ERA Coalition (link below), and spreading the word about its importance. I appreciate the caution around "learning in the flow of work," but let's not confuse it with "teaching in the flow of work." Learning happens all the time, whether or not there's someone handing out PowerPoints. People do learn by doing, but not necessarily when they’re being taught. Training is vital, yet we often undervalue it because we don’t allocate enough time away from daily tasks for real learning. We need to step back and let people experiment and absorb new skills. Balancing immediate performance support with dedicated learning time is essential for meaningful development.

Effective July 1st, California Employers are required to have a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan. The plan should include the reporting and documentation process for workplace violence incidents, mandatory training requirements, as well as recording and reporting obligations. Ensuring compliance with these regulations is crucial. I am available to review your plan thoroughly before implementation. This reporting requirement serves to pinpoint potential wage gaps and promote accountability in pay practices. Moreover, employers must maintain records of job titles and wage histories for each employee during and post-employment for up to three years. This record-keeping provision facilitates investigations into pay discrimination allegations, ensuring a fair and equitable work environment. A good portion of my correspondence here is from super qualified, motivated people who have unfortunately been laid off and are either looking for a role or for advice on what to do - as many have never been in that position before. I often wonder if the company executing the layoffs realized the financial benefit they expected. I can't answer that, but this article provides some great information about the cultural impact of layoffs. Not surprisingly, they have a lasting impact on overall company confidence, belief in career opportunities, and leadership confidence.
