"After passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, manufacturers have developed products derived from hemp (cannabis containing <0.3% Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol [Δ9-THC]) featuring emerging cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), Δ8-THC, cannabigerol (CBG), and cannabinol (CBN). While other vertical farming companies have shut down, Oishii bucks the trend by focusing on taste, closing $150 million from Bloom8 Miyako Capital and several others. Oishii is best known for its strawberries, which the company has slowly but steadily expanded access to over the last few years via Whole Foods Market. As of now, berries are available predominately in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic US states, though Oishii just expanded to Chicago this month. Is the cannabis beverage market the next big opportunity in Michigan? I think so, and we’re shifting our business model to focus on it, along with other innovative products. After facing fundraising challenges with a larger cultivation and processing concept, my cofounder Alex Eckman and I took a step back and let the data guide us. We saw that moving more quickly to market while allowing for greater scalability was critical, especially given the high potential for profit in the cannabis drink sector. A processing facility with a strong focus on beverage manufacturing would reduce the initial investment, accelerate our launch, and target a segment we believe is on the verge of taking off. We’ve been working on a cost plan to guide our initial build-out, but it’s still a work in progress, and we’d love help refining it. If you have experience in beverage manufacturing or insights on innovative equipment solutions, let’s connect! We’re looking for practical advice, potential partnerships, and fresh ideas to bring this vision to life. Collaboration is key in the ever evolving cannabis space, especially in markets like California where regulatory and financial challenges push even the biggest players to innovate. From legacy farmers to large-scale operators, companies are realizing the power of joining forces! To navigate this, more and more companies are joining forces. Whether it's working with labs to generate new SKU’s or partnering with retailers to reach new consumers, the cannabis community is finding strength in unity 🌱 🍯 The California market is a true example of ‘survival of the fittest’ where those who collaborate are best positioned to thrive. As we see more co-creation efforts, the future of cannabis looks brighter, more unified, and full of opportunity! Hmmmmm...this Minnesota's approach to CannAbis Event Organizers application fee $750  initial license fee $750  Cannabis event organizers plan and host events featuring cannabis, and may allow for the sale of cannabis, cannabis products, and lower-potency hemp products to consumers at events like festivals (an event cannot last more than four days). They can also provide spaces for consumers to use cannabis. An event organizer must receive local approval, including obtaining any necessary permits or licenses issued by a local unit of government. Although they represent different locations on a spectrum, recent posts from Brian G. & Megan Mbengue, MSMCT, BSN, RN - followed by talks with my colleague Matthew Tomko have inspired me to reflect on the importance of how we educate children about cannabis. Cannabis has been stigmatized, misunderstood, & weaponized in narratives that vilified both the plant & the people who used it. As a leader in the cannabis industry, one of my greatest responsibilities is educating the next generation, specifically my daughter. My approach? Transparency + balance. In our home, cannabis isn’t in her face, nor is it hidden in fear. Not a panacea, but definitely not demonized. We discuss it with care & clarity, explaining that it is a medicine—powerful, life-changing even—but only for those who need it. It’s not a remedy for colds or a scraped knee but a solution for those with serious conditions like cancer or autism, where pharmaceutical medicines might fall short. I’ve told my daughter that cannabis has been unfairly presented in our culture & others, & that these misconceptions have unfortunately spread like wildfire. I also make it clear that while cannabis is an incredible plant, it’s not something for her to explore until she is a young adult with a fully developed brain. We all need time and space to understand our bodies, our minds, & how we approach health. Cannabis can be responsibly used for leisure, but that too is something I emphasize belongs to a different stage in life. As a father, I don’t avoid the topic, but I also don’t place it on a pedestal. She has learned to identify even the most abstract watercolor representations of the plant as “medicine plants.” It’s special, yes—but it’s not the focal point of our discussions. My daughter is healthy, & for her, that’s all that matters right now. Truth is, I believe we owe our children honest conversations, not half-truths & avoidance. Hiding from reality doesn’t empower them—it does the opposite. We’ve seen it time & again in programs like DARE, which, ironically, introduced me to substances I had never even thought about. Instead of dissuading me, they piqued my curiosity. Misinformation about cannabis & psychedelics back then did more harm than good, demonizing substances that, under the right circumstances, heal. I see this echoed in the world today, even among the patients I serve. Some question parents who bring their children along to dispensaries—though no one bats an eye when they accompany them to fill prescriptions at the pharmacy or browse the shelves of a liquor store. It’s the stigma speaking, not logic. I believe in setting an example that’s rooted in respect for the truth. Cannabis isn’t necessarily for everyone—but the truth about it should be. As professionals, parents, & educators, it’s our duty to break the cycles of misinformation & give our children—& society—a clearer, more informed perspective. Not to encourage, not to entice, but to empower.
