It’s Holly Scott’s #medtech roundup. It’s tradeshow season. Why go? Holly mentioned some upcoming conferences and it struck me - tradeshow and conference season is upon us. How do you choose which ones to attend? Time and expense are big factors for me. How about you? In the US and for my part of #medtech, there are 3: Vision Expo West (Vegas), Vision By Design (DFW) and American Academy Of Optometry (Indy). I’m definitely going to Vegas. Though I have a “2 night fuse” for Vegas, the show has interesting exhibits and generally good biannual business meetings with key customers. There’s also a ton of folks at the show to connect with. If you’re going to VEW, hit me up. The other two are a toss up. The DFW show has gone downhill since COVID…but there’s a chance more folks will attend this year. The Indy show is primarily academic and scientific, but my big company has a whole team dedicated to that. Plus, scheduling is tough as we begin our fiscal year. UCLA Innovation Fund Pitch Day in MedTech was a spectacular showcase of groundbreaking innovation, collaboration, and ingenuity. Hosted by UCLA Technology Development Group, the event brought together top-tier academic minds, investors, and industry leaders to propel transformative technologies from concept to market. Highlights included diverse pitches from advanced medical devices to cutting-edge diagnostics, with projects such as real-time reproductive hormone monitoring, a novel ventriculoperitoneal shunt failure detection system, and revolutionary lung disease scoring from CT images. Serving as a panelist was an incredible experience, providing a unique opportunity to engage with visionary teams and evaluate their innovative solutions. It was inspiring to witness the passion and precision of the presenters as they shared their game-changing ideas, backed by rigorous research and a drive to address critical healthcare challenges. The collaborative discussions and feedback among panelists added immense value to shaping the future of these promising technologies. How did we successfully bring our medical device to the largest birthing hospital in the US, Northside Atlanta? I share this story and several others in my monthly newsletter. I discuss my personal experience in: - Identifying key decision makers: Critical in shortening the sales cycle. - Conferences I attended: Regional meetings are often a great way to meet key clinicians from large hospital groups. - Gaining clinical buy-in: Often a department wide presentation to introduce your product makes the biggest impact. - Navigating the value analysis committee: Clinical data, user feedback, and a cost-benefit analysis all add weight. - Training & education: For devices used department wide, your education strategy is critical in driving adoption. Northside are now one of the largest users in the US, but it wasn’t easy getting there. A lot of research, relationship building, travel, enthusiasm, hard-work, and patience were needed. It was a valuable experience working through the sales cycle at one of the largest birthing hospitals in the country, and one which would be applied to several other large accounts throughout the country. Dr. Ripal Gandhi, M.D., FSVM, FSIR's recent visit to India provided valuable insights into the treatment of pulmonary embolism with the Inari Medical FlowTriever system. I really appreciate his passion for all things VTE during our chats this week as did many physicians across India. As an enrolling site investigator and expert operator, Dr. Gandhi has a great perspective on the just-released PEERLESS study, which demonstrated the efficacy of the FlowTriever system versus catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT). But there's more! Dr. Gandhi also recently reported a cross-sectional analysis of U.S. healthcare claims data that compared in-hospital outcomes for patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for PE. This research found that the choice of device significantly impacts patient outcomes, with the FlowTriever system associated with better in-hospital mortality rates and higher rates of discharge to home compared to continuous aspiration devices. Innovation in healthcare is usually fairly slow - to the great frustration of those behind the innovation at times. Seeing the partnership with Mevion Medical Systems move so quickly has been phenomenal. Proton therapy systems pretty much always used to require a new facility to be built given the 3 storey rotating gantry structure. That new facility brought with it the vast majority of the project cost and took protons out of reach for most hospitals. The S250-FIT is the ONLY complete proton therapy system where the accelerator, patient positioning and imaging system fit within the confines of a single linear accelerator vault. This first installation at Stanford redefines proton therapy and shows the world what is possible. Change is here. The future is bright - the future is upright.
