Had time to digest the FBI's 2023 active shooter annual report. While the number of incidents declined slightly from 2022 - 48 vs 50 - it remains 8 TIMES higher than in early 2000s. The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. America, we have a problem. And it will take systemic improvements to correct - to mental healthcare, societal norms, firearms legislation, security and law enforcement training. I agree with the NICP that removing seats from bus stops is not a CPTED concept that should be supported. CPTED has a focus on making communities more livable. The strategy employed here would make normal users less likely to use transit.

Leadership In Policing Good leadership is crucial to good police work. I completed a masters degree in leadership, with a research project on police culture, and police officer mental health. Here are 4 lessons on leadership that I have learned from Extreme Ownership that will transform our culture: 1) De-centralized command: This comes directly from Extreme Ownership. We can’t wait for permission to act, especially in dangerous situations. We need to build up the capacity of our people through good training, and then trust them to make the right decisions under high stress. 2) Personal Accountability: When something bad happens, start by looking in the mirror at what you could have done better as a leader. This might mean training, policies or communication need to be changed. Start with what you could have done better. 3) Simplicity: Cops use acronyms and check lists to remember essential things. We do it because it’s smart and it works. Police interactions can be intense and highly varied. Teaching simple concepts help to make good decisions in those challenging situations is important. 4) Set Priorities: If everything is a priority, then you have no priorities. The number one priority for police leaders needs to be to take care of their people. Many officers feel pulled in too many directions, and are asked to do more with less. That can lead us to fail on the most important things. Officer wellness need to be the top priority. Bonus tip: Extreme ownership is one of the best books I have ever read. The leadership lessons in this book are simple and effective. It should be a must read for everyone in law enforcement.
