With revenue of $26.5 billion in FY23, Avnet now ranks at No. 157. Previously ranked No. 163, this marks Avnet’s 45th year on the prestigious list. Saturated math is used a lot in multimedia software. These are operations that force results to hit upper and lower limits so that numbers don't wrap around. Overflows are not allowed to happen. An example of not using it will cause the whites in pictures to be so bright that they become black. Maxing out at the brightest level gives you a much better result. The scalar math operations of modern processors lack this ability and can only do it with extra code. The only way they can do it without the extra code is with vector math. There it was added as an after-thought. ϕPPL has the same set of rules for both scalar and vector math which is not possible for RISC processors in which all scalar values have to be extended to the word width of the machine the software is running on. ϕPPL has saturating operators that make it obvious what is being done. An example saturating add is shown in the picture. It is the plus sign with a bar above and below it. The operator in ϕAsm (the assembler for ϕEngine) is given in the operation mnemonic. An example of this is also shown in the picture. The variables used are 16-bit unsigned integers. This would only be known in the ϕPPL example by looking at the declaration which is not shown. However, the size of the operands are supplied in each instruction in ϕEngine. The ‘Ⓤ’ character informs you that the register is interpreted as an Unsigned Integer. The ‘D’ says that it is a Double Byte which is 16-bits. The number indicates the position that the register occupies. The ‘⤒’symbol is tentatively a modifier that informs the assembler that the operation is saturated. As of this morning, a search on Google leads me to believe that there is currently no saturation symbol in Unicode. So I used what is the Maximum operator in ϕPPL for that purpose. In ϕEngine machine code saturation is accomplished by prefixing the instruction with the one byte Saturate Prefix for both Scalar and Vector (i.e. Array) operations. Overflows are not possible during loads because the destination register is always at least as large as the source (whether it be a register or memory). However, overflows can happen during stores. But the example shown implies that the source for the load and the destination for the store are the same size and type as the subject register. Because of this, the only place where a saturate has any effect is during the add. #electronics #computers #programming
