11-12 years ago my BME Capstone Team at ASU created an application called iHear, which administered a hearing test and created a custom hearing aid for the user based off that test. For this, we used basic wired headphones with a mic +the iPhone/iPod Touch technology available at the time. The idea was that it would provide an inexpensive way for people to have access to a hearing aid, using the technology they already had. Additionally, it was also meant to work with older versions of iPhone and the iPod Touch. To give some perspective, each hearing aid (not a pair) can range from $1000-3500. Ideally, one could probably create some sort of donation/gifting program of the older versions of iPhone/iPod Touch to increase access to helpful applications such as this. Today, Apple has released this as a feature of iPhone 16 + AirPods Pro. While we had zero involvement in this, the prototypes we had did work and there was initial interest from research universities investing in this, but that was not the path we chose to follow as we all had different career plans unfolding. Releasing technology for the right things seems to move slowly. I urge the technology space to invest more in the advancement of healthcare to push ideas like this to become widely available to everyone faster.

Unexpected blessings… I was blessed to have had a father who was quiet, yet powerful and most importantly, full of matter-of-fact, Twain-like wisdom. It’s the kind of wisdom that comes from being a simple person with simple values. The truth is almost all of what I share here is wisdom that he shared with me while he was alive. He talked a lot about fairness and injustice. He also taught me about the evils of judgment. As a soldier in the Marine Corps, he talked about going there to fight for democracy, only to be judged by people as a baby killer. As a master machinist, described in crystal clear detail how he would fabricate parts that were so precise, they would make a human hair seem huge by comparison. Yet in all this precision, he and other machinist were looked on as grumpy old guys covered in cutting fluid. Judgment does terrible things to people, and also causes people to do terrible things. To understand fairness, and injustice, as well as judgment, were all blessings that were bestowed upon me unexpectedly - from a strong, quiet man who was powerful in his actions. I am reminded of him as a new year comes. One of his bits of knowledge was not to judge life as an entitlement. That life is a gift that doesn’t last very long. Something that I learned when he passed away unexpectedly in 2021. Look forward to your time here on earth, and to the memories of loved ones who have moved on. Then think about your career and understand that you will spend most of your life working for a living. When you appreciate blessings that come from others, you will find that these blessings are incredibly powerful - to you as a worker and as a human being… #Mentoring

Portable Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) A contract up to $20 million was awarded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to create a portable OCT system that weighs a few pounds, takes high-resolution 3D scans of the retina in less than a second at a fraction of the cost of the existing state-of-the-art commercial OCT systems. The proposed system uses space-division multiplexing optical coherence tomography (SDM-OCT) technology that takes multiple high-definition OCT images simultaneously with a single detector and is at least 10 times faster than existing OCT scanners. To make OCT more accessible to a wider range of health-care facilities and patients, the system will be built on photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and custom-designed electronic integrated circuits that could offer advanced eye screening to many more patients and at a lower cost. ________________________________________________________________ https://lnkd.in/gbYNejN6
