We tried something different with Women's Network 2nd Quarter Book Club and read "You Should Smile More: How to Dismantle Gender Bias in the Workplace" by Dawn Hudson, Cie Nicholson, Mitzi Short, Katie Lacey, Lori Tauber Marcus and Angelique Bellmer Krembs. This book empowers women and men to unlock a culture of greatness in the workforce—one little thing at a time. Written by six C-suite women with a collective resume covering 29 industries, the book offers a completely new lens through which to talk about and tackle the stubborn remnants of gender bias at work. We had a great discussion with David Lanier and Brent Woodruff to discuss this quarter's book and hear a different perspective. The positive note to share is that we all agreed that CBRE has been progressive in this area and we have not shared the sentiments outlined in the book at CBRE. We focused on how to address situations such as "Great Idea Greg!", learning golf or another activity to be included, the importance of a mentor or sponsor and most importantly the "Meeting Before the Meeting." Excellent benchmarking results and analysis from Shivaun R. and XY Sense in their latest quarterly Workplace Utilization index! Key takeaways for me: - Workplace Utilization is up across the globe, but we still have too much space, ave. 45% vs. the 65% - 85% vibrancy sweet spot. - The power balance has shifted from employee-dominated to a more even split between employees and employers. The report details possible causes, but the effect is increased utilization and attitudes towards hybrid working. - We have too much of the wrong space types! Over half of all desks are used <1 hour. Most collaborative spaces, even those highly utilized by time, are underutilized by capacity. - Hybrid working is the new normal, with Tues-Thurs solidified as the new hybrid work-week. - Former blanket approaches to occupancy planning and workplace design no longer apply. We now need targeted approaches using real data + agile methodology to create spaces that entice occupants back into the office. Real estate leaders tracking their workplace utilization have the data needed to design effective workplaces while shedding unneeded footprint. The cost savings from portfolio consolidation funds investment into better spaces and amenities. Bonus: less space = less carbon emissions produced to power, light, and condition.

Thanks for highlighting my thoughts, Forbes Business Council! Culture stems from the collective engagement with others; business culture is less organic but still needs to evolve and adopt to a myriad of changes. Our increasingly distributed workforce allows for greater access to high-caliber talent but can also create unforeseen challenges for leaders around establishing and maintaining culture, supporting healthy internal communication and fostering team collaboration.
