ICYMI: A 2.5% Medicare cut for Pathology services will take effect in 2025 after Congress elected not to pass a measure that would have offset the reduction. That said, CAP reports some lawmakers are open to passing the payment fix later this spring and retroactively applying it to January 1. 🦠 Spotlight on Sink Drains: Identifying and Mitigating Infection Risks in Healthcare A recent study sheds light on an often-overlooked source of healthcare-associated infections: sink drains as “super-splashers” of gram-negative bacilli. Key findings include: 1️⃣ Sinks as superspreaders: Certain sinks can disperse bacteria beyond the bowl, contributing to infection risks in healthcare settings. 2️⃣ High-risk factors: Shallow sink bowls, high flow rates, slow drainage, and poor faucet placement were identified as contributors to bacterial dispersal. 3️⃣ Fluorescent gel testing: This innovative method proved 100% sensitive in detecting high-risk sinks. 4️⃣ Practical interventions: Simple measures like reducing water flow rates and clearing obstructions significantly reduced bacterial dispersal. 💡 Why this matters: Proactive identification and remediation of “super-splasher” sinks can prevent outbreaks and enhance infection control practices.
