Happy Flatfish is the largest flatfish farm in Korea in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. On the 4th, at the entrance of Happy Flatfish, the largest flatfish farm in Korea in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. A 5-ton truck with the words "Jeju Fish Farming" came in, and employees were loading about 50 yellow plastic boxes containing dead flatfish. While the fishy smell vibrates from the bodies, a #halibut that is still breathless jumps and plunges to the concrete floor. Oh Ki-soo, a happy CEO of flatfish who was watching this, said. "He's about to die, too. The heat was unusually long this summer, so two tons of flatfish died every week due to the high water temperature. The current situation is better than the summer, but it's not easy. The price of the 産 continues to soar due to the death of all the flatfish, but many fish farms are on the verge of closing because there are not enough flatfish to sell." CEO Oh operates Jeju's largest flatfish farm with 6,000 pyeong (19,835 square meters). In the aftermath of the prolonged heat wave this summer until the Chuseok holiday, Jeju Island, the largest flatfish production area in Korea, has been put on "super alert." As each flatfish farm in Jeju was unable to escape the tsunami of mass deaths, 30% of all businesses were forced to close their businesses. The flatfish disappeared in each fish farm, and the price of the mountain area soared to 22,000 won from 15,000 won per kilogram until last spring. According to the Fisheries Observation Center of the Korea Maritime Development Institute, Jeju Island digests about 60% of the domestic flatfish volume. Wando is 35% and the rest of the country is 5%. Last year, flatfish shipments totaled 37,246 tons, with Jeju accounting for 22,855 tons (61.4%) but flatfish shipments fell sharply to 28,866 tons from January to September this year. The main reason is a sharp drop in Jeju volume, which is only 15,237 tons during the same period. As supply plunges, prices soar. As many of you know, 2023-2024 has brought a lot of changes to the #controlledenvironmentagriculture industry and Hort Americas. From failed businesses, to changes in business partners and a new economic environments..."the only constant appears to be change." With this being said we have not loss focus on what is important to us. For us to be successful, we know that both our clients and our partners need to be prosperous. We continue to trust and believe that a long term focus on sustainability is the best way to achieve this success. You can define this approach as one that focuses on reducing inputs while efficiently and reliably maximizing outputs over long periods of time. In other words, its not only about kgs/m2 its more about a sustainable $/kg/m2 (for the environment, the community, the business and the consumer.) Areas we continue to research and be excited about: 1.) Lighting: short term focus is being put on not only spectrum and intensity, but how do lights integrate with a wide variety intelligent climate management systems (possibly AI) so that the farm can reduce capex, opex and still hit targeted yields. Long term focus is on end of life options for #LEDgrowlights. This means lots of focus on how the lights are constructed, their reliability and then deconstructed for recyclability. 2.) Substrates: short term focus is identifying substrates that address global logistics risk and carbon intensity. Long term focus, ensuring that all substrates we sell have a cradle to cradle option. (Much harder than one would think.) 3.) Fertilizers: in this case, short and long term focus is the same. Find alternative nitrogen sources that make sense to the environment at a reasonable price point. (Again, much harder than one would think.) There are other projects/products we are working with/on that we are still learning about. Still trying to understand their importance to the market which is often more narrow and niche. These range from cropping accessories that can be more easily disposed of to ones that can reduce the dependency on plastics when possible all the way to seed technology and treatments that are more suitable to wider climates. Anthirrhinum majus (Snapdragon) We’re all familiar with the concept of separations or categories in horticulture. Daffodils, Dahlias, Tulips and more have been hybridized so often that we’ve needed to better categorize their descendants and are separated into divisions. Snapdragons, as well, have separations but theirs are referred to as groups. My hunch is that divisions are phenotypic differentiations and that groups are growing requirement differentiations, but I was not able to confirm this with a quick internet search. (If anyone knows please enlighten me!) Either way, you can actually choose a better variety of snapdragon to suit your timing! I love snapdragons and was excited to learn this. You can extend your season and, if you time everything right, can essentially have snaps all season, if you wanted to. Before learning about the groups, I planned snapdragons for my plot. I knew that snaps generally prefer cool weather but decided that it was an experiment worth taking the time to learn. I selected “Rocket Mix” from Johnny’s Seeds and the seedlings were planted just as things started to warm up in NYC. Believe it or not, I had chosen a group 4 snapdragon when I wasn’t even aware snap groups were a thing. I guess I was meant to have them in my plot! They’ve done beautiful, even through two separate heat waves, and are now really starting to take off. With the cooler weather this week, I know they’ll be happier than ever. These groups are classifications of a variety’s response to day length and temperature. Many insects hibernate through the winter in leaf and other dead plant material like hollow stems. In the fall and winter, larvae and cocoons of many species of butterflies and moth are nestled in the leaves beneath your feet. The American bumble bee also depends on fallen leaf materials.

We talk a lot about minimizing disturbance in a regenerative cropping systems and the kind of disturbance that gets most attention is physical disturbance, tillage and compaction. Tillage is a cataclysmic event to a soil organism. But what about chemical disturbance? How does application of chemicals affect soil life and agroecosystems? Tillage is like pushing the reset button on soil ecological succession. How do the chemicals applied (regardless of their intended purpose) affect succession? The biological control seen below often requires a maturation time or development in succession to reach a point where control is possible. If you're nuking army worms with chemicals regularly, you'll have a hard time making the case of regenerative and a harder time reaching this point in succession.

'Overall, part-time contact did not reduce weaning and separation distress for cows or calves for either weaning method. Part-time cows showed reduced behavioral responses to separation (greater lying time and less searching behavior), especially on the day of and 24 h after separation, but they showed a similarly strong vocal response to separation as full-time cows. Part-time calves made substantially more high-pitched vocalizations than full-time calves at 24 h after separation. Furthermore, gradual weaning by reducing contact time did not seem to better prepare cows or calves for complete milk removal and separation; most behavioral and vocal responses occurred on the day of separation for gradual-weaning cows and calves, but 24 h later, the reverse occurred for abrupt-weaning cows and there was no difference between gradual- and abrupt-weaning calves. Our results suggest that part-time contact and gradual-weaning conditions likely resulted in hunger and expectation for reunion, which together may have exaggerated behavioral responses at separation. Temporary daily separations may not have increased independence of cow and calf, and the gradual-weaning method here may not have reduced milk intake by calves. S. Korea bans German pork imports following foot-and-mouth disease outbreak South Korea placed an import ban on German pork Saturday following an outbreak of highly contagious foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease in the European nation, the agriculture ministry said, Azernews reports, citing Yonhap. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said the decision was made after Germany reported its first FMD case since 1988. FMD is one of the most infectious diseases for cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle and pigs, and can spread rapidly if uncontrolled. The ministry said it will conduct FMD virus tests on German pork products shipped to the nation since Dec. 27. Currently, approximately 360 tons of German pork, shipped between Oct. 26 and Nov. 17, is awaiting quarantine inspection. There are so many brands of organic fertilizer but they are all made of the same thing. Dead animals. Animals bred, exploited and killed for your organic vegetable garden. Or your hydrangeas. Or your houseplants. Organic in fertilizers means “from life” and that’s it. It doesn’t mean small farm or homegrown or ethical or safe. All fertilizer, regardless of the packaging, is nothing but a pipeline product from CAFOs and slaughterhouses. I promoted these products for a decade before really understanding what they were. Let me save you the time. Animal fertilizers are toxic, tragic and tired. Let’s turn the page and research plant-based alternatives for organic gardening. Wouldn’t you prefer comfrey to cattle? The Biggest Fish Ever Caught (By IGFA Standards) What Is the International Game Fish Association? Established in 1939, the International Game Fish Association promotes the conservation of game fish and espouses ethical practices. The IGFA maintains a database of world-record fish that you can narrow down to different categories such as all tackle, freshwater fish and saltwater fish. 5. Bluefin Tuna, 1979 In Nova Scotia, Canada, Ken Fraser caught a 1,496-pound (678.58-kilogram) Atlantic bluefin tuna. It took Fraser 45 minutes to reel in the large fish. 4. Black Marlin, 1953 In 1953, Alfred Glassel Jr. caught a 1,560-pound (707.61-kilogram) black marlin in Cabo Blanco, Peru. 3. Greenland Shark, 1987 On October 18, 1987, Terje Nordtvedt caught a 1,708-pound, 9-ounce (775-kilogram) Greenland shark in Trondheimsfjord, Norway. These sharks can potentially live more than 500 years. 2. Tiger Shark, 2004 In Ulladulla, Australia, Kevin James Clapson caught a massive shark, weighing in at 1,785 pounds (810 kilograms). Typically found in tropical and subtropical water, these giant fish can measure 25 feet long. 1. Great White Shark, 1959 In 1959, Alfred Dean caught the largest fish on record, a great white shark that weighed more than a ton off the southern coast of Australia. The Biggest Freshwater Fish The biggest freshwater fishes are not nearly as big as the saltwater ones. The largest freshwater fish caught is a 297-pound Wels catfish. Attila Zsedely landed the fish in River Po, Italy, in 2010. The Guinness Book of World Records, however, recognizes another freshwater fish as the biggest: a 661-pound stingray that fishermen caught in Cambodia in 2022. Before that, the Guinness Record holder was the 646-pound Mekong giant catfish caught in Thailand. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐞: 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐨❣️ These stuffed tomatoes feature all the flavors and textures of classic clams casino: bacon, garlic, breadcrumbs, and parsley. To prevent them from disintegrating in the oven, use just-ripe tomatoes, but not overripe. Serve with a simple green salad, rice, pasta, polenta, or bread to make a complete meal, or as a side dish with any simple main course, such as poached salmon or roast chicken. Storage: Refrigerate for up to 3 days; gently reheat in a 300-degree oven until warm. 𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 Servings: 3-6 (makes 6 stuffed tomatoes) 6 vine-ripened tomatoes (about 1 3/4 pounds total) 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for the baking dish 4 ounces bacon (4 to 7 strips, depending on thickness), diced 4 garlic cloves, minced or finely grated 1 cup panko 1/2 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped Fine salt 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Step 1 Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 425 degrees. Step 2 Using a serrated knife, cut a thin slice off the top and bottom of each tomato. Using a spoon, scoop out the centers of each one. (Discard the stem, and reserve the pulp and juice.) When scooping, don’t hollow out the entire thing. Keep each tomato intact: You’re basically looking to create tomato cups. Finely chop the tomato pulp and any usable parts from the tops and bottoms, and reserve for the stuffing. Step 3 In a medium (10-inch) skillet over medium heat, combine the olive oil and bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until the bacon is browned and crisp around the edges, 7 to 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook just until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Turn off the heat and stir in the reserved chopped tomato trimmings, panko and parsley. Season the mixture to taste with salt. Step 4 Lightly grease the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish or quarter sheet pan with oil. Arrange the tomatoes in the dish, hollowed side up, evenly spacing them apart. Season the interior of each tomato with a large pinch of salt, then evenly divide the panko mixture among the tomatoes. (If you have more mixture than can fit in the tomatoes, save it to sprinkle on pasta or your morning eggs.) Roast for about 25 minutes, or until the tomatoes become lightly brown and soften but still retain their shape. Serve hot or warm. 𝐄𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲! 🎉
