Did you know a plunger does not fall at the same velocity through the tubing string? Two good questions to ask - "Why?" and "Does it matter?" Most know that when a plunger hits the liquid column, the fall velocity immediately and dramatically slows. The plunger in this Echometer Company chart starts falling at 240 fpm and gradually slows to 135 fpm. Why? That's not the result of impacting liquid! The fall velocity change is not immediate or dramatic. Tubing pressure increases with the the well closed, and as the plunger falls deeper into the tubing. Pressure causes the gas in the tubing to be more dense, thus the plunger falls slower! Does it matter? If your well opens as soon as the plunger reaches the bottom, then setting the plunger fall time correctly is crucial. That can not be done without taking pressure into consideration. How? Who drilled the best wells in Lower 48 last year? At this point, we have enough data across all basins to make a ranking! In 2023, the private operator Kaiser Francis crushed it, with their 19 wells in the Permian making an average of 305k barrels in their first 12 months. Other top Permian operators like Marathon, Coterra, ConocoPhillips, and Oxy also rise to the top, but surprisingly, two Uinta operators round out the top six: Ovintiv and XCL. We have been covering the incredible Uinta a lot over the past couple years, but it’s great to see the potential translate into this kind of performance. Despite being the earliest unconventional basin, the Williston saw excellent well results last year: Grayson Mill, Chord, Marathon, and XOM all landed in the top 12. Counter-narrative, operators have extended high performance there despite a mostly-drilled play core. In our age of consolidation, many of the largest operators make this list in multiple basins, including ConocoPhillips (Permian, EF), ExxonMobil (Williston, Permian), Devon (Permian, Williston), and Oxy (Permian, PRB). However, it’s still heartening to see top privates here like Kaiser Francis, XCL, Grayson Mill, and Mewbourne, even if they’re being acquired! Encino Energy rounds out the list as the only Appalachian player, thanks to excellent Utica well results. They would rank a lot higher if BOEs were included! However, even using a 20:1 equivalency would result in a list filled with Haynesville and Appalachian operators, a reminder of just how energy-prolific shale gas wells can be. Who will top the list in 2024? Coterra currently sits atop our ranking (using forecasted production to generate a 1-year cumulative), though not as many operators make our 15 wells in-basin per year cutoff. Across Lower 48, 2024 is looking even more productive than 2023 and has the potential to be the most productive year ever for unconventionals. The Heat Is on in More Ways Than One It’s not just the blistering temps making life uncomfortable in the Permian these days. Not while record volumes have producers sweating bullets to move more of their residual gas to downstream markets. Not while pipelines inch closer to maximum capacity. And certainly not while demand for natural gas will only continue to grow to feed more LNG plants, meet rising NGL export levels, and power the booming industry of AI data and crypto mining centers now putting electrical grids on notice. Nope. All things considered, the summer’s heat is a mere pesky mosquito compared to the bite—and pressure—Permian producers face juggling these challenges amid dirt-cheap gas prices while Permian midstreamers weigh their investments in new pipeline growth projects. Reese Energy Consulting today is following the latest from the Permian and what’s now the final countdown to welcome startup of the 580-mile Matterhorn Express. And the Matterhorn matters in a huge way to help decongest gas takeaway constraints by flowing up to 2.5 BCFD from West Texas to the Katy area outside of Houston. Sweet music to the ears, no doubt. At least until the end of next year. In the meantime, five other pipeline projects await FID to bring added headache relief to the nation’s second-largest gas producing basin, although most could take up to two years to build. They include Targa Resources’ Apex, Energy Transfer’s Warrior, Kinder Morgan, Inc.’s expansion of its Natural Gas Pipeline of America system, ONEOK’s expansion of its West Texas NGL Pipeline, and Moss Lake Partners’ DeLa Express. ONEOK is buying a set of NGL pipelines for $280 million. The announcement says a lot about contemporary oil & gas strategy. Let’s start with the corporate speak: ====== "This strategic acquisition provides the quickest pipeline connectivity to and within the critical supply and demand centers for our NGLs, refined products and crude oil assets in the Gulf Coast," said Pierce H. Norton II, ONEOK president and chief executive officer. ====== The word “quickest” is incredibly important here. As I’ve remarked before, today’s oil & gas industry is all about time to value. Investors have no patience for future windfalls. The future is way too uncertain. They want to see value today, and often that value is from increased cash flows, a fraction of which go directly to shareholders. You can compare this path – buying existing assets – with the alternative of building your own new pipeline system. Building new systems can be expensive, slow (because of permitting and just general construction limitations), and risky. It’s much easier to buy something in place and integrate it in short order. That’s what ONEOK is committing to do. Another critically important part of the above quote is the mention of the Gulf Coast. Again, with uncertainty at unprecedented levels across the oil & gas landscape, investors prefer a geographical concentration in the most resilient areas of supply and demand. The Gulf Coast certainly qualifies. The Gulf Coast has existing infrastructure, access to land- and water-based distribution networks, and operational efficiencies that will allow it to remain competitive far longer than other, less favorable marketplaces. What then did we learn about contemporary oil & gas strategy from this ONEOK announcement? ➊ Moderate, tangible value today is worth much more than potentially larger, more speculative value in the future. ➋ The Gulf Coast should be one of the last regions to become stranded as decarbonization momentum builds. Accuracy is everything. Had the pleasure of having one of the most easy, productive, and collaborative conversations with one of our industry’s brightest minds Steven Ko. From his chemical engineering background, to formerly the VP of Completions of EQT Corporation, to his current role at Rivitt(if you don’t know of Rivitt I suggest you spend some time and look into them; impressive stuff) Steven reminded me of something that the majority tend to forget. Which was a breath of fresh air in my opinion to hear. Without accuracy, and without the professionals in the engineering space that actually care about the accuracy of the data we are putting together. What are we really trying to accomplish? The reality is the paradigms has shifted. It used to be drilling the well was the most important aspect. But there is a stronger argument to be made on the fact it’s the completions processes that are the most important. From the Frac to the drillout. There is nothing more important than accuracy for the Frac in the formation. Yet how can we have accuracy when E&P’s have gotten accustomed to the status-quo of inaccurate information without pushing for better, more accurate, innovation? We talk about K factors, SOP’s, recalibrations of surface equipment and the list goes on. What those small changes can do for the accuracy and our industry as a whole. We have engineers in the labs spending thousands and thousands of man hours doing sampling to get the most accurate information possible. But is any of it being done in the field? Those of us who have spent extensive time in the field do know the answer. It’s disappointing. While the automated acid blending system dubbed #AcidCannon I designed, developed, and patented is just the start of what goals I have. I(along with Steven and several others I know) want to change the perspective that we have when we look at the completions “eco system”. Mine is just a small part of innovation. Upwards and onwards. But the start happens at the discussions/conversations that’s where we truly begin to make change happen.

Withdrawals from petroleum inventories everywhere except for a build in SPR. The EIA reports are out and overall, we down 12.4 MMB. SPR went up 0.26 MMB to 393 MMB, Crude oil drew down 4.2 MMB to 417 MMB while petroleum products drew down 8.5 MMB to 804 MMB. The latter combined for 12.7MMB of drawdown to 1220 MMB – upward pressure on gasoline prices. Everything is within normal operating ranges with SPR coming off its recent low. Net overall exports continue. Net oil in was 2.7 MMB/D and product net exports out were 5.1 MMB/D. That’s an overall export of 2.4 MMB/D, a drawdown of 16.6 MMB for the week. Add tis net drawdown back and we would have a build for the week. Production was still at 13.6 MMB/D last week but that’s off the peak of two weeks ago, The rig count was stable over the course of last week. 589 total, 14 federal offshore 12 GOM. One more rig is chasing oil, one less chasing gas. Oil prices dropped anywhere from $1.70 (Brent) to $3.13 (LLS). WTI finished last week at $69.71/BBL. Add $3.48 for Brent and $1.75 for LLS. The crack spread rose $2.00 to $10.99/BBL. Gasoline was up 3¢ to $3.05/GAL. Spot natural gas prices at Henry Hub dropped a nickel to $3.10/MMBTU while futures prices rose 13¢to $3.41/MMBTU. Benoit Morenne writes in the WSJ on December 28, “U.S. Shale Is Growing Old. That’s a Problem for Donald Trump’s Oil Plans.” The Climate and Energy article appears in today’s (12/30) WSJ. “Wildcatters are mostly gone, replaced by more disciplined oil giants. Wall Street has helped instill that discipline, pushing oil companies to focus more on producing cash for investors. Meanwhile, production in most U.S. crude regions is set to decline as fields mature and sweet spots dwindle. “What this means: The oil patch is unlikely to see the kind of breakneck growth it saw in Trump’s first term, when daily crude production shot up from about nine million barrels to roughly 13 million. “’We’re not going to have the explosive growth that we’ve seen,’ Richard Dealy, who oversees Exxon Mobil’s Permian operations, said… ‘A telltale sign of shale’s ripening is the fates of rapidly disappearing wildcatters, who ignited the shale boom by deploying new drilling techniques and hydraulic fracturing. These companies, many of them privately held, retained a penchant for frantic drilling even after their publicly traded peers reigned in spending and started returning cash to investors.’ For those interested SPE, AAPG and SEG are jointly hosting a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) conference in Houston at the G.R.
