    Completed my M.S.I.S.E. with a termination project entitled "Resolving the MRP v. Lean Conflict."

    As I look back, this stands out: I completed an Engineering Internship at a tier one automotive supplier. Problem: excessive downtime. My suggestion was they spent too much time switching runs from one model to the next (a result of customer's wishes from the Big 3). My belief was they should design and manufacture standard models, which would be low cost and high quality. I recall a Mfg Engineer sneering at me: "we can't tell them how to make their cars."​ 20 years later I see this in Lean Mfg…

My belief was they should design and manufacture standard models, which would be low cost and high quality. I recall a Mfg Engineer sneering at me: "we can't tell them how to make their cars."​ 20 years later I see this in Lean Mfg curriculums as supplier involvement, concurrent engineering, part standardization, minimize setups, etc. This is a great example of why my greatest pet peeve as a consultant is hearing "but you don't understand Mike, that's not how we do it here."

    I'm most thankful for two courses that were part of my A.S. curriculum. One is Differential Equations, which taught me a lesson in humility... no more illusions about being a mathematical genius.
