(2) The connection of a digital twin to its physical equivalent is made by a thread of data, and as processing power, sensors, and #bigdata analysis improves, that link strengthens. The state-of-the-art used to connect these threads across #space and large infrastructure will be necessary for the safety, planning, maintenance, and optimization of Billion-dollar assets far from home. Marine Cloud Brightening (#MCB), is a proposed approach to improve the world’s safety and security amid a changing climate. However, significant uncertainties, related in part to challenges to modeling both the natural processes that underlie MCB and proposed MCB approaches, are a barrier to advancing our understanding. In a paper published in Geoscientific Model Development, Phil J. Rasch, Haruki Hirasawa, Mingxuan Wu, Sarah J. Doherty, Robert Wood, Hailong Wang, Andy Jones, James Haywood and Hansi Singh, define a new protocol that allows researchers to configure MCB simulations in a standardized and more realistic way. This is critical to enable comparison of how climate responds to equivalent implementations of MCB across different models – and, ultimately, identify which responses appear to be robust and which are less certain. This new protocol marks a significant advance in coordinating MCB research, with the potential to both further science and expand participation by researchers globally. It is part of the work supported under SilverLining’s Safe Climate Research Initiative and ARISE modeling program and through the University of Washington’s MCB Program, which is funded by the generous support of a growing consortium of individual and foundation donors. Governments of developed countries typically spend $2 to $10/year/inhabitant on air quality monitoring. They achieve a spatiotemporal resolution that is notoriously insufficient to understand and track one’s local exposure in urban environments. New IOT-based methods collect up to a thousand times more data at a fraction of the cost: that is cents/year/inhabitant. The Biden administration is making a big move to secure US dominance in the semiconductor industry by offering $285 million in federal funding for the development of digital twin technology. Here's what you need to know: 1️⃣ The funds, sourced from the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act, will be used to establish a CHIPS Manufacturing USA institute focused on digital twins for the semiconductor industry. 2️⃣ Digital twins are virtual representations of physical chips that mimic the real version, making it easier to test new processors before production. 3️⃣ The institute aims to create a diverse network to share resources with companies developing and manufacturing both physical semiconductors and digital twins. 4️⃣ The funding will support various activities, including: Operational activities Basic and applied research Shared facilities Demonstration projects Workforce training related to digital twins 5️⃣ Digital twin-based research can leverage AI to accelerate chip development and manufacturing in the US.
